I had this posted in the forums, but I thought it better to place it in the blogs section.
Good Day All,
Well, I think it is time for me to question my use of pot. I've been using the stuff for various reasons since I was 14. I'm now 22 and I've found that it has become a serious crutch in my life. I'm reliant on it sometimes to produce music via the computer, especially due to the tedious aspect involved with producing music with a computer. Though lately I've found that marijuana has increasingly lost its power in focusing my attention. I used to use it to write music because it engaged me in whatever I was doing, but now I just get sleepy and confused. I think my increased use of it is because my girlfriend's absence, she is gone for the summer, and also, I'm taking summer courses and I just don't have much energy after classes...I think this increase in consumption has deemed me production-less...
What is it that I need? Should I completely abandon marijuana and start to rely on only myself to produce? Or should I just take an innocent break from marijuana and begin a careful schedule of consumption?
Any ideas?

hehe, it's not a question of getting clean, but more of question of whether or not pot facilitates the creative process when it comes to the production of music. It's usually assisted me in working on tracks, at least when I use it in moderation. Too much and I'm there scratching my head on what I was intending to do originally with a sample or whatever.
I think I'll take a week break and during that week start some projects without being lit...

Dope is creative but not productive.
You can come up with the most elaborate, intricate plans on dope but you wont do fuck all about them. Its the same with it and music. You will loosen up and be creative but try to get your head down to do some number crunching or something and its not going to happen.

I find it helps me endure the tedious aspects of production a lot more easily than without it.
I'm trying to think of pothead producers out there. Luke Vibert is a big pothead and swears by its assistance in his productions...um, after Luke Vibert I'm kind of at a loss. Though I've seen Aphex and Vibert smoke up on stage before.

If you don't want to stop using it, then moderate.
Moderation is key.

marijuana is just another state of reality.. all you have to do is overcome the physical boundries and it is as natural as can be.

I've yet to huff gas...
though, while I was a courtesy clerk at Albertsons at age 15 I'd occasionally sneak into the back freezer and suck on cans of whip cream...it made putting up the returns oh so fun.e . . .
N20, the equivalant of crack to hippies...

haha, oh yes...I remember that face. Mind you, I wasn't a big fan of huffing gas, but 20 or so cartridges of n20, a cracker, and a few punching balloons made for a giggly giddy night...

bah, I did nitrous only a few times. A couple of times as a clerk and then a couple of times at various parties.
So, no....no holes have been fucked in my brain, at least not due to any of my past nitrous inhaling experiences.
N2o is used all around the world as an anesthetic...so I really doubt my few experiences with it caused any long term damage to my lil' ol' brain.

i say take a break. or if you do smoke, dont create. temporarily sever that relationship, and see what happens. i like pot, but treat it like alcohol, once and awhile it's fun to indulge, but it you become reliant on it than you should stop.

Ahh the truth comes out! jk
Try this. Get really stoned and try to make the funniest most un-you track ever.
Try this. Get high and draw apicture about a song you haven't yet written but have been brainstorming.
Don't do this. Plan on doing anything after you smoke, before you smoke. Because you almost always end up doing something else.

yeah, I've already decided on taking a break...this week is going to be that break.
I think a big part of all this is that I'm taking summer courses now...I get home totally pooped and exhausted. I spark up a joint and from already being drained it only enhances the drainage I'm already experiencing.
Also, I think I'm ready for a break away from the poot.

everything is a crutch.
anything can be an addiction.
its a headshift thing.
I don't think I would advocate making music on heroin to anyone, but
who really cares about the private affairs of another person?
I have enough of my own problems without sticking my nose into
anyone elses' - wish the US .gov felt like that.
------
good luck with studies and creativity.
i'm glad i can still make some tunes as an old man.
you'll be fine.
