It's based on the Analord series. Although I love a lot of that stuff some of the music sounds completely out-of-tune to me. Is it just me? I don'[t have perfect pitch and can listen to stuff which is a little out-of-tune but some of this stuff is way off. Why?

I saw a 5 part documentary by Howard Goodall called 'Big Bangs' and one episode was called, "Accidentals will happen: The Invention of Equal Temperament", and about how western adoption and proliferation of the chromatic scale had rendered westerners inable to listen to any other microtuning without feeling that it was 'out of tune'.

Knowing that AFX is a massive prankster, is there the possibility that he is using alternate microtunings and thus 'tricking' the listener?

Edit: Listening to this mix, I'm of the persuasion that the 'dj' has no concept of 'key mixing' but some of the tunes do sound 'off'

yes, Zanf it's also about the dj here, but the Analord has out-of-tuneness in it. APX' music is very modal, so microtuning is not something which should fit in I think. APX is cool with his sounds and rhythms but it's all very normal and modal 12-tone stuff. Even blues is more microtonal that APX' music because it uses the minor/ major thirds all the time

That DJ should call himself 'DJ Milk' because the slightest bit of heat and he curdles to shit.

maybe he just doesn't care about pitch. :p

I know I don't. half the time I don't even bother tuning my guitars, (which is ironic because I'm a bit of a synaesthete)

Mick Karn doesnt bother to tune his basses - he just picks up and plays by ear.

Most 'DJs' dont care about pitch but those mixes are like driving a 10 ton truck through 4.5 foot barriers and hearing the scraping of metal like nails down a chalkboard.

The synths are a couple waves a few cents off from each other maybe?

ah, but even when his basses are out of tune, his playing is in tune! because he's the shit.

yeah karn's a fretless player though, so thats not exactly mind bending!
a lot of VSTs will give you the option now of detuning keys separately, and thats what a lot of this sounds like. loose tuning is the secret to the raw and loose analog feel on a lot of aphex records.

for the flange/chorus effect? that can be cool

scraping letal nails on chalkboard.
curdles like shit
10 ton truck through barricades.
you guys are the funniest ...
I can picture all that exactly.
I don't think microtuning is what's up here.
I think its lazy sequencing added to a lazy mix..
... but hey, just an opinion.

wtf is out-of-tune? it doesnt follow the natural laws of tune?

I was listening to chosen lords and yeah parts of it are off tune. There are some bits that remind me of the BOC detunings, but some of the rest are just a melody against the bass with a few cents off.

his stuff very much sounds like he's using non 12-tone tunings to me. i just got "chosen lords" and it's very evident.
