i just have to give some serious love to apple for making my transition over from a powerbook to a mac pro so absolutely enjoyable. i gotta say i havent used a pc for five years, but i remember battles i have had with pcwhich, by the end of them, made me feel like i had invented the pc. this is not the case with mac!
wonderful!
i purchased my powerbook g4 five years ago, it was nearly 2000 pounds sterling. which is a lot. when your a student. but i was lucky and i used the system. i got three overdrafts. although this in itself is abad idea, my mac laptop has recorded bands with pro tools without glitching out its entire life. in fact, me and some buddies set up an entire studio, which actually did have some commercial customers before going bust, and my g4 was the brain! amazing! now, this machine never was that great for mixing badass mixes because it always had an astmah attack after you added about twenty plug ins, but then, when you think about it i guess thats not too bad...
anyway, she's had her day and its time to make space for daddy... i bought a mac pro just now. i got it home, and it just said "do you wanna import all your old shizzle off your old machine?" i was like "yeah" and it just did it. no worries. then i plugged in the old internet and it just worked, as if i'd never logged off firefox! it even remembered my login at em411 and i didnt have to reinstate my password!
acctually, now its getting a little bit worrying... how do they do that?
I remember when i used to mess up my parents pc's at home, and then have to spend, about the next two or three days figuring out what i had done, re installing wondows, doing stuff in dos, trying to figure out if id entered some wierd stuff somewhere or whatever... it was rubbish! so...
i now have a machine which is a million times more powerful (exageration) than my other machine i bought five years ago, for the same money, and as long as it goes on in life as my old machine did, with no real bugs, problems, moaning about this that the other like pcs do (or did for me...) and as long as it lasts five years the price tag is absolutely completely justified. in my opinion anyway...
so there we go
cheers steve jobs!

I wish i can share your sentiment regarding the Leopard O/S though, Leopard has brought me back to the days I used to own a pc.. instability city!
and the crap thing is, I can't even downgrade to Tiger due to the hardware restrictions apple instilled in all the their current laptops, including my Macbook.

i think the biggest problem with pcs is that the os isn't installed by microsoft, its installed by the manufacturer, along with whatever marketing and other junky apps they have. i favor an xp pc thats set up well (minimally). osx has too many bells and whistles for my taste, i really don't believe that its provided at no performance cost. i want an os that runs apps really well. that is all. i don't care what else it can do, so long as my apps run well. i haven't got into vista yet, but by the looks of it i could be going to mac next OS generation (when xp is obsolete), unless native instruments releases reaktor for linux.

i agree about how much bloatware comes with windows. I admit, when I used to own a pc running XP which I stripped down. I nearly didn't have as many minor crashes as I'm getting with Leopard.. for example my finder resets or freezes daily.. safari disappears without a trace and my wifi gets all intermittent on me. Tiger was sweet.

oh, i meant to say apple os being bloatware.. but so is windows, the only difference between the two O/S is that all the bells and whistles don't hinder the performance of the O/S in the same way it would with windows, apple lacks the ill conceived registry system.

i just ganged up on a microscope sales guy with another mac fanatic about how his company makes the best microscopes but their image capture and analysis software is PC-only and we refuse to buy it because we hate windows. it was quite a satisfying rant. i hate windows.
i haven't upgraded my music computer to leopard yet. to make it work with my apogee system i have to do a firmware upgrade so i'm going to skip leopard for now. my work mac has leopard and its OK. the worst thing i did was put office 2008 on it. what a bloated disgusting piece of crap.

i am a scientist, ergo nerd.
our microscope is super awesome. and it runs on a mac. with a 30" monitor. and i was looking at mitochondria, not amoebae. and no, not ameba mitochondria. but they are all squiggly and could probably spell something. like those weird things in space from the great glass elevator.

mlbot is a neuroscientist? cool! i took a course on psychology and one on perception and i will be taking one on cognition next year. this isn't totally lost on me, the technical language is a little dense though. i definitely don't see the larger picture... what are the behavioural consequences of these findings, or is that unclear at this point?

not really. my experiences are, that it runs a little snappier and i love the new mail compared to the one from 10.4
but one thing that feels weird is, that it makes the mbp run a little hotter, but this could maybe just because of the warm summer.

@ skab. I personally feel that leopard feels clunkier and less stable than tiger, granted it's become more stable higher up the version tree though.
