I mean normally I wouldn't encourge this but if the official disk won't work why not using a downloaded one? I did hear that you can't downgrade HP laptops but I don't see how they could stop you!?!

um, what is the drive controller? i would imagine you need a driver disc for that first...at least that's what i had to do with my scsi system to get the XP installer to see the drive. think of it as character building.

i had this problem trying to do the same on my inspiron...you will need SATA drivers for your HD before you can continue, and its advisable to upgrade your BIOS to the latest version too. You'll need to set your SATA/RAID bios options to 'compatible/autodetect' if such options exist.
its not an inpiron 1721 is it?

Im sure theres a way to get it working I know theres a work around on the 12" inspiron (1220?) bit of a hasel but it is posbile, good to check which dells can be downgraded, do soem googling and people have worked out which drivers you need aswell
