--> So I got this newish inspiron running vista oem. I cannot downgrade it to xp! the official bootable installer for xp will not find the HD at all. I was really hoping to use it for a live rig but now I'm fearing the inevitable.. mac laptop :P

I mean normally I wouldn't encourge this but if the official disk won't work why not using a downloaded one? I did hear that you can't downgrade HP laptops but I don't see how they could stop you!?!

zanf?

um, what is the drive controller? i would imagine you need a driver disc for that first...at least that's what i had to do with my scsi system to get the XP installer to see the drive. think of it as character building.

i had this problem trying to do the same on my inspiron...you will need SATA drivers for your HD before you can continue, and its advisable to upgrade your BIOS to the latest version too. You'll need to set your SATA/RAID bios options to 'compatible/autodetect' if such options exist.

its not an inpiron 1721 is it?

grow up and but a real computer you stupid cheap kid

maybe it's time to go the linux way? i think the NRV10 is reported to work with ffado link

To fix this Go to BIOS and change the SATA settings from AHCI(or something) to ATA. it may prompt you to change another setting first, do that. But that will fix it and allow you to install win xp

I had to install XP on 23 insprion 1525s last week at work

Also Phreak,
That is definitely uncalled for.
Its obviously retaliation to everyone hating on your live show, but with an attitude like that you deserve it.

Im sure theres a way to get it working I know theres a work around on the 12" inspiron (1220?) bit of a hasel but it is posbile, good to check which dells can be downgraded, do soem googling and people have worked out which drivers you need aswell
