can anyone recommend a good software vocoder for doing blatantly old school electro style vocals? needed for a remix that's due friday. i'm going to borrow a microkorg from a friend, but i don't know if he'll get it to me in time, what condition it's in, or if it will sound right. so i'm looking for a good software solution as a backup. suggestions? | |

right! thanks for the tip! totally forgot about that one. i'll hunt it down. even a demo is fine since i only need it for about ten seconds of audio.

btw, i found an opensource one on sourceforge called "vintage vocoder" which advertises that you can "make robot voices". can't wait to see what it sounds like. it might just be the right level of cheese i need.

someone made a vocoder using the effects in ableton live - it was posted on the forums. I remember it had a pretty fun sound.

this one is highly recommended. doesn't produce soft 70s vocoder-sounds, more metallic. but really versatile.

i use orange vocoder a lot, but it's too "soft" for this track. hard to describe... i want a more formant sound. the open source vintage vocoder actually does exactly what i want. but getting a melody out of it is going to be tricky since there's no way to play it. i would need to cut up the vocals into syllables and send each to its own fx channel with an instance of vv set at a different note. messy...
i might just wait on the microkorg. it's important that i can play the melody while singing into the mic -- or at least while feeding in samples. either that or i need to vocode out syllables at different notes and it will just come out sounding weird and disjointed unless i work my ass off for it. i want a very synthetic, monophonic robot voice, but want the timing of it to be somewhat natural.
i use fl studio and so far i haven't found a vocoder that i can both run on the fx channel and play like like an instrument (using the typing keyboard). i might have to do dust off the midi keyboard and see which of these can respond. rob papen's predator seems to have the most potential for this. and i still need to hunt down ni's vocoder.
hmmm... maybe i'll check the reaktor user library...
so many vocoders!

I think there are some really good ones in the Reaktor UL. Try the Classic Vocoder II which is one of the default ensembles that comes with reaktor. sounds just like what you need!
