i've been exploring some new directions in my music recently.
generally in a direction away from digital more towards analog, less sequencing, more noise and hiss.
- i'm selling my monome link
- i want to buy a rhodes piano instead
- i've been recording more to tape... cheap cassette decks, and reel to reel 4 track
- i've been distorting everything i record through a preamp
- using cheap mics
- worry less about environmental artifacts and often encouraging them
- doing less editing and more recording the full track live
- adding fewer plugins and rather adding any effects through boxes as i record
- not using virtual instruments or software for sound (but i think i still want to use audiomulch)
- caring less about mistakes, worrying more about making the process more continuous and fun.
that is all... thought i'd share.

it's funny, that everytime i'm so amazed by some flashy on-line hyper digital animation & sound, and be totally amazed by it, i stumble on thoughts like these that puts you back in a more cosy 'human' like atmosphere
for me it's all about balance really
having done a looot of post production in a digital domain, i don't mind endlessy tweaking sound and making tons of variations with all kinds of plug-ins in front of a screen for hours & hours (one of the reasons i enjoy mixits a lot - remember those?)
but having just played my cheap chinese strat copy for three hours gave me a lot of smiles (partially inspired by roshi's great blog) and a feeling of directness and musicianship (what a daft term)
but to 'set things in stone' as it were, is very fulfilling and decisive and spontanious, which will only benefit your music i guess
so enjoy the noise

I've been doing a lot of the same things lately too. Loving it. It's a hell of a lot more fun to write music like this.
I think your sound will lend itself to this methodology and aesthetic quite well.

I think it lends to the idea of having a physical way to work with music, you can only do so much with software, and in realtime. Plugins are becoming such a cheap trick, it takes away the fun of creating music with it.
Having real instruments around allows you to play around more with the room/ambience, manipulating the sound in more interesting ways, and the realistic sound quality is just incomparable.

it's definitely a personality thing.
some people like tweaking to get that perfect sound, some just want to create instantly.
i'm discovering i'm of the latter.
but the nice consequence is that i'm also finding the product to be much more personal and nostalgic, meaning a more "interesting" creation... but at the same time a more unpolished and amateurish creation.

Good job...keeping things more natural.
I have had similar thoughts lately since hardware is now a possibility for me. Hands-on tweaking and jamming has actually inspired me on the digital side as well. Quantize is always off now by default. I jam out and record ALL results to hopefully bring more life into my songs. I am breaking out of "loop syndrome" slowly but surely. It feels good.

don't sell your monome unless you really have to, i regret selling my 40h on a daily basis.
