I just graduated and now I'm looking for some work in sound design, composition and mixing for TV/film. I've got some money to spend and intend to make my setup a bit more 'professionial'. I have the monitors and soundcard covered, but one thing that has always bothered me was using a mouse in DAW's like Cubase and Logic for mixing. So I thought it would be a good idea to look at DAW controllers, such as the Mackie Control Universal Pro link (which hits the upper limit of my budget). There are also cheaper options, with just 1 fader, like the Presonus Fireport link or the Frontier Alphatrack link .
Does anyone of you have any experience with these things? Is it a positive influence on your workflow? Or should I spend my money on a nice synth ;)

i have a 20-fader euphonix set up (two mc mix's and one mc control) that i use with logic. i absolutely LOVE having faders under my fingertips, particularly when getting rough balances at the beginning of a mix. i've mixed on big analog consoles and with nothing more than a trackball, and this feels much more like being on a big desk. writing in automation with faders and knobs somehow seems more "musical", too, at least to me.

frontier design also makes a wireless one called the tranzport. you could get some faders as well as that if you really need them.
i know nothing about this stuff, though. years of playing quake have convinced me that the mouse is unbeatable. i generally stick with cubase, a gaming mouse, a giant mousepad, fully customized one button key commands, the modifier keys and some macros. these control solutions are why i use cubase. none of the other DAWs are as good with mouse + keyboard (in my experience).
i could be completely wrong though.

edit: i'm more into editing than recording/mixing/mastering. so that could be the difference.

review and a bit of a story on how the presonus one gets pushed forward.
seems the frontier one is a good option.
writing automation is def easier with a fader
if you can combine it with a good mouse, you can be fast with just one fader.
no adjusting levels on more than one channel at a time though.

I dont know how your studio looks like, but the proffesionality of your work is based on your sounds, not on the fact you tweaked knobs and faders or you have been clicking a mouse.
So if you want to do some tv/film(no games?) gigs i would not go for any of your options really. Most of the work in this field is all about foley sounds, fx, dialogue etc. Mastering both diegetic and non-diegetic sounds need different aproaches. Which means that it needs many different mastering tools.
I do sound design and i love hardware, next thing on my want list is a 120xp Subharmonic Synthesizer, yummy!

well, i do have experience with sound design/composition and doing a mix for film, but tweaking virtual faders with a mouse just isn't working for me. i want to establish a workflow that feels more intuitive and smooth. so it is not about upgrading the sounds, it's about upgrading the work process.
i'm thinking about buying the faderport, i can always sell it and upgrade to the mackie or something else in that league.
