--> Hey all,

I originally wrote this blog last night, but must have deleted it while trying to update it by mistake.

Anyway, I will attempt to reiterate:

I've been meaning to show you all some studio pics for some time now, but everything has been so disorganized / messy for the last while I just kept putting it off.

Well, yesterday I decided to tear it all down, have a think, and set everything back up (after a big clean too - I even sorted out my wire box that earlier resembled a wire ball). I'm pretty happy with the results.

As some of your read in one of my other threads, I recently picked up an E-mu XL-7 for a variety of reasons, but mainly to use as a sequencer and to get me away from the computer.

So far I am very happy with the performance of this machine. Though, I have decided that I do still need a laptop in my composing/production setup.

One of the things that bugged me about using my laptop with music before was that I have to tear it down and set it up day after day. I am a freelance designer/developer and sometimes musician for a living, and I am always out around the city in different offices with my 17" macbook pro. This machine still sits in the center of the setup next to my monitors as I am constantly moving files back and forth.

A couple months ago I inherited a couple old powerbook g4 15" machines that both had their own issues. With some love and care and a little help from my friend Cliph, we managed to merge them into one fully functional machine (on the left in the pics next to the S5000). I've decided to use this laptop as my main production machine. It will primarily run reason. I'm finding it very nice to have a "dedicated" machine to music, even though it's only a 1.33 GHz powerpc with 512MB ram (for now, I will upgrade it to 2GB soon). This machine is linked at the end of the midi chain using an Uno, and is also connected to the S5000 and mpd32 via usb.

It is likely I will still gig with my macbook pro (if I use a computer in the setup), simply because I know that anything that comes close to pushing the g4 will run just fine on it.

I've always liked to keep my recording and editing station separate, and this setup is no different. The macpro is the heart of my studio and is pretty much the go to place for any computer-intensive task. It's my main center for design, video, random web shit, communications etc. I picked this beast up about 10 months ago. Prior to this machine I had used windows exclusively in this position. I'm still getting used to not having acid and audition handy, as those were my programs of choice for editing and sequencing in the past. I'm using tracktion for now as I find it most similar to acid, but have yet to find a nice editor under osx. This machine is connected to an fa66 for recording purposes.

The room itself is a bit of an odd shape, and I've reorganized the furniture a few times. I think I have it at it's best right now. The small wall that jets out contains the heating/cooling, and there isn't much I can do about that. I find that when I sit at the macpro/editing station, or on the couches (where most of the pics were taken from) I get a pretty good reference of the sound. In fact, when you sit in the opposite corner it sounds beautiful as you are in the perfect spot to pick up those old fisher speakers.

Anyway, I hope that I remembered to write everything I covered last night, and that you all enjoy the pics!

this looks really really nice

these images warm my virgo heart.

Yay for virgos!

this looks really nice and cozy.
cool

Nice space. Multiple arts going on in the studio. I approve this message.

As I posted on the last blog...I always enjoy studio pics. I miss the em411 studio section!

great setup!! what kind of table is that?

The desk is a Galant from Ikea. I think it was around $400 CDN. One main rounded corner piece and two extenders.

It's not meant to be set up this way, the extenders are meant to be on either side of the corner piece. It seems stable enough though.

breakscience- put 'studio' into the search- you will get about 30 good results (plus some irrelevent shit)
as long as people use tags properly the blogs will work fine for studios, reviews, patches
gorf- do you make very visual music with all those screens?

wow, search works?!...thanks bla!

tc electronic spark and bias peak are supposed to be really good wave editors for mac.
or did you mean multi track? like logic, bias deck, cubase, ...

one day everything will be wireless and you won't have to deal with that spaghetti curtain hanging underneath your desk.

bla: Hahaha, not at all. The real estate is mainly for design and dev. :P

eyesnine: I've not tried either tc electronic spark or bias peak, I will have to look into them. I didn't mean multitrack, thanks!

Yes, the spaghetti curtain still needs to be dealt with. I've been thinking about building a little tray into the bottom of the table to hang down so that all the wires can rest on it. Cat hair and wires is a pain in the ass!

wow.
i don't know what else to say.

Amazing setup! love it.

first of all, wow, everything is neat and clean and spaced out, great!

in my studio, all of my cables get tangled up with hair from my massive bear rug, so i know what you mean about the cat hair.also all the ash from my enormous fireplace gets all jammed up in my business as well as crumbs from all my exotic pipe tobaccos and dark french cigarette tobacco. one time I was on my hands and knees underneath my desk wrestling with wires when I found the missing Pie't Moundi'an under a humongous pile of miami vice cassette tape duplicates
