Went to the beck show in the cities yesterday. I don't like beck, but some of the em stuff that he does is at least interesting. The only em gear that I could see was a korg radias and some other boxes (drum machine / samplers probably) that were shoved on a table in the back corner.
I guess beck needed most of it for his one guitar and "presence". they did a semi cool song where they got up in front and had 3 small portable samplers, beck had what looked like the pad from a modded kp on his wrist and the last guy had a midi drum. they jammed for a while, but the acoustics in that place sucked and whoever manned the soundboard was terrible. It wasn't just that though, everyone kept getting feedback every 20 min and none of the singers could stay on key.
I'm open to new genre's of music but I was like WTF?!?! I've heard high school bands that have their shit together more than these guys.
6$ beer too...grrr

I missed Beck, because I was going to see him at Field Day. That fell through, and so did my opportunity to see Beck. I've been raw about it, and this post made me feel better. I wish you could have had a good time, though.

yeah, that is, to an extent, the point. I am always really encouraged to hear others have pitchiness live. I think the key to a good live performance is really feeling it. I mean, Nico was all pitch problems, but there's something so moving about her performance you are taken by that... I'd rather listen to Nico than any american idol winner any day.

I saw Beck at ACL in Austin here...I was a lil' unimpressed, though, mostly because I dig his em stuff so much and there was a lack of that. I thought the wireless samplers etc was a lil' cheesy :-P

I've seen Beck twice, once in 2000 at a festival in Portugal and once here in Toronto in 2006. They were definitely two of my favorite shows I've ever been to.
Though, the Toronto show completely blew the festival performance away. He had a little stage on the main stage and a bunch of puppets playing along mimicking what everyone on the stage was doing. It was a really interesting show visually. I'm not so into the newer msuic of his, but I still really appreciate him as an artist, even if he is a Scientologist! :P
Sorry to hear you didn't have anywhere near as good of an experience.
