--> Hi folks,
I wrote last (if you can really consider this a blog) about 5.1 and indie-electronic music and got some good responses. recently found this release:

Now I intend to try to mix a 5.1 disk, and am evaluating some of the ultra cheap speaker systems. Anybody have any experience with the cheapo logitechs?

for mixing in surround, u cant use any of these 5.1 systems as they excepct info from a decoder.
u need 6 individual speakers, and a sound card that has that many out puts.
then u mix in your app, and bounce to a AC3 or DTS or wotever compatible stream.

on windows, u can create a 5.1 compatible stream with the Windows Media Audio 9 codec. for free.
everything else is gonna cost you.

hmmm. . .
i'm using digital performer which which supports surround, and an delta 1010 which has 8 invidiv. outs, so i have the outputs covered.
the logitech website says this about the inputs:
Source Inputs

* Digital optical for DVD or CD players, PlayStation®2, Xbox®**
* Digital coaxial for DVD or CD players or PC sound cards (requires coaxial cable, sold separately)
* 6 channel direct (3 stereo-mini connectors) for 2, 4, or 6 channel PC sound cards OR
* 6 channel direct (3 stereo-mini connectors) for 3 stereo analog mini audio sources, like CD and DVD players, Playstation 2, Xbox, or 2 channel PC sound cards (some devices may require stereo mini to dual RCA adapter, sold separately)
* Analog stereo-mini (on side panel of control center) for portable CD, MP3,or MiniDisc® players

that should cover it, no?

dope, u'r gonna need some addaptors then.

ack
now i'm wondering. . . maybe a 5.1 audio system isn't necessary if i already have a sub and two monitors. . . why not just by three more monitors?
how does the subwoofer channel work? Should it simply be the bass from all 5 channels?
royce

time to read up on "bass management".

bass management. . . so if i'm understanding, a 5.1 compatible DAW will send out a LFE channel that is the sum of all of the tracks? or do I have to specify a LFE channel? in digital performer there is a panner that one uses to direct sounds to one of five speakers. . . LFE is conspicuously absent.
thanks bleen and jdg for all of the very helpful links and reading.

the other thing i'm reading is that volume control can be painful on non-professional (i.e. < 10,000) desks. . . so perhaps a "home 5.1" system is the way to go with a dedicated volume controller. i'm not really thrilled with what i'm seeing out there though.

it's too bad these aren't available in a 5.1 package:
