i'd like to buy a midi controller with live lite or something, but are there any alternatives for the moment?

have a look at gleechlab

also have a look at the quite functional renoise demo

and also have a look at automat, a free synth that has had it's first proper release not long ago

mulab is a pretty cool link and its hugely cross platform and almost freeware

link is probably your best place to look around.

Reaper is an excellent DAW, and although it is not free (its 50 bucks for noncommercial use) the demo doesn't have any limits, so you could use it until you scrape the 50 bucks together.

link has short descriptions of free mac audio software. Definitely check it out
