depending on how out you like your music you should check out 'the stone', john zorn's club. It's a different 'curator' every month. this one is more on the avant-jazz + world music tip. link

every sunday there's also an event called "share" which tends to lean towards abstract visuals + abstract electronic music. If you're into ambient or noisy stuff, it might be worth checking out. Just google share nyc.

If you like music in general on a more ghetto tip, there's a place near where I live in Bushwick Brooklyn called Goodbye Blue Mondays that has like 4+ bands every night. There is rarely a cover charge and you can see everything from punk bands to experimental electronics to country and indie rock. Steve, the owner, has an open booking policy so the evenings tend to be fairly interesting.
