I've played around with similar pedals and here are my thoughts:
He has a guitar synth that he puts through a harmonizer - usually an octave up or down - that's usually through some sort of lush reverb. I bet they abused the digitech space station early on, which has the string swell preset that does this.
Here is an example of something similar: link - I strummed my guitar very lightly into an instance of transverb (octave up and octave down). Mostly two note chords, through an instance of ambience...restraint is the key

which band.i think most pad type sounds are made with his guitar,think i even spotted a midi pickup on his guitar at stars of the lid gig.
maybe a combination of guitar and laptop like christpher willits without all the folding notes thing.

All transverb + reverb
Transverb is just a tunable delay - so you can tune it to play back an octave up and a octave down.
The light strumming is very important - you don't want too much harshness in your signal.

You can also use a pitch shifter/octaver to do something similar - which is what that preset on the spacestation does.
I guess the important thing is that the two note chords transposed up and down basically are working to create a more complex harmonic series, which is why it's hard to get more complex chords to work with this

The attacks are semisoft because of the gentle strumming and the way the octaves are delayed
But - you can do something similar by putting transverb after a synth - try it.
Essentially, you are doing additive synthesis by combining the original signals with the octaves - much like an organ and its stops. This technique works better with things that are closer to sine waves because of overtones in the more complex signals can interact in unfavorable ways.

fyi, i use transverb a lot. particularly on samsara/smoke and mirrors is it the most obvious.
there are about a million ways to make this sound, but you don't ALWAYS want to put a verb at the end of the chain.. sometimes it works better with echo delay after reverb on a send channel
