Hi there,
So a neighbor of my mom's has a massive pump organ that they want to get rid of. It's a Mason and Hamlin, and the pumps work, but not all the keys do. In fact, three notes in the upper register are non-existent, and one note near the lower middle is incorrect. I have found two for sale online. One in which they are asking for 1200. and another they ask for 600. Considring that I will have to move this massive creature and have it repaired, I'm thinking no more than 200. Jdg actually suggested that too. But that seems so insulting, no?
The sound is wonderful, btw, especially in the lower register.
Anyone have any solid advice?

why not make a mold of existing keys and cast your own? it may not look the prettiest but it will be way more reasonable in cost.
or is it the drawbars you are talking about?

no, it's the keys. I figure it's probably missing a few reeds or something needs fixing inside...

the sound is non-existent. Sorry, I put that oddly. The actual key is there, but when you hit it... no sound.

$200 sounds pretty fair. Just tell them one in perfect condition usually goes for 4 or 5 on craiglist (of course, even those may not sell). Then remind them that this one is broken.

If they want to get rid of it, they probably would be willing to go with a lower price.
Just saying.
Let your conscience be your guide.

well, my conscience says, I want it. The low notes gave me a deep feeling of inspiration. And I definitely don't have more than 200 to spend, so I'm going to suggest it... Thanks folks!

i often see pianos+organs in the local paper (in chester,uk) listed as 'free- buyer collects'
but that one looks a bit more special

Another thing to think about is...
Can you move it yourself? It looks heavy in the picture. You *might* have to hire some people to help you and that's going to cost more.
Seriously cool looking organ though. Is the lamp, on the right hand side, part of it?

I don't think it's insulting to bargain...I mean they can pull a face and say no (or more productively, counter your offer). But I wouldn't think you'd really hurt anyone's feelings.
Besides, if they care at all about it...It would be going to a good home, you'd get it running good and make nice songs with it.

yeah, I agree with bla. I see these things at the goodwill for $60 ish. Craigslist, often times free.
I too might have the wrong idea of this organ but I would say $100 considering the price of the servicing that will be needed. My logic is that I would pay around $100 for an accordion that is out of tune ect.
I am guessing you know how to service these things? The price of repair could be a pretty penny.

did i tell you the story about my mother-in-law, who tried to find a replacement part for her pump organ by searching the internet, and when she typed in "pump organ diaphram" into google, was suprised that she didn't find anything relating to musical instruments?
