--> So I just saw this documentary last night called Wild Combination. It was about a musician named Arthur Russell. He's probably been mentioned on this board before. He was a Cellist and pretty ahead of his time as far as his musical creations. He would do these performances where he would sing and run his cello through fx pedals. Kind of made me think of Roshi and Fredo. He went on to make a couple disco tracks that were monumental, and he co founded a label called sleeping bag records(Mantronix, Nice & Smooth.) He was a very prolific dood, that was kind of unknown at the time he was alive. Sadly, he died at age 40 from AIDS.

I saw this movie last night at the Roxy in SF. If it's playing in your town you should check it out. There is a website up with some more 411 here link
And clips of his performances on youtube.

I definitely want to see this.

He was a pretty amazing guy. "World of Echo" is my favorite record of his right now - just his voice and distorted cello. His playing is so weird and percussive, I'm still trying to figure out what is FX and what is technique.

Pretty prolific - he left a huge number of reel to reel recordings (something in the hundreds, I think?)

Also, teaser here: link

And trailer at: link

He was so emotionally transparent in his performances - just amazing.

i <3 arthur russell ... amazing stuff.

it was a good doc for sure. they also just released an album of some of his folk/country influenced songs - it's pretty nice, i didn't really know what to expect.

Oooh, he looks interesting, thx craque

(near freudian slip - I nearly typed crapue)

Well worth watching. Informative and inspiring stuff.

thanks for jogging my memory. i saw this blog and we decided to go check it out at the roxie in SF [edit: oh, i see you saw it here as well!] the other night. a very nice film. a word of warning though: if you're going to smuggle in beer and homemade popcorn, don't go early when there are only a few other people, all sitting right around you, scowling nastily every time you rustle your paper popcorn bag. to be fair, in any city the white-haired antagonist in front of you could very well have been a good friend of AR, disgusted with our disrespect

anyway, go see it and bawl your eyes out when his parents reminisce: so touching.

also, the Loft scenes are out of this world. as are the pent-up home studio dx-7 scenes that i know all you dorks will be able to identify with.
