last night i did a gig for a major energy company. they had a party/dinner for "important people" , politicians, mayor, cultural bigwigs and so on. i was singing a couple of songs.
i know the event organizer from earlier and he knows that i also make music and sounds and stuff. he asked me if i could make a little "jingle", something they would use several times during the evening, to make people understand something was going to happen on stage. i made a little sumthing - a simple synth pad building, bass drone fades in, a little bell tree with some effects all building up towards a stinger "boom" and a gong. simple but efficient.
now they want to buy the thing!!!
they want to continue using it!!!
wtf?, ha ha.
how much does the right to use such a thing cost?
what should i say?

how are they going to use it? on tv? big $ on the radio? some $. at events maybe a little $.
seems commercial music licensing is valued by what it will be used for. if everything/tv id say a few grand.

is it a really memorable sound? If it's very special I would offer to license it to them, say for one year they pay you the equivalent of 2,000. dollars. (too much? too little?) This way protects you, so if it becomes something that represents them powerfully you can up the price next time.

yes, I agree with celibacyclub. My instinct at first was to write 5,000. but thought it looks greedy. But, hell... it's not greedy at all. If they are going to be using it for tv license use for a year for 5,000 - 10,000. (you decide)

the guy who wrote the 'stuck on you' bandaid jingle got 5 grand.
the guy who wrote the 'what would you do for a kitkat bar' got a couple million dollars.
somewhere in between those two

I'd say make them pay you on a per-use basis.
They want to use it once a month at conferences then say a flat rate of 100$ / pounds PLUS 50$ or pounds per use, but if they want to make it into the next nbc jingle and use it a million times a year...drop it appropriately.
