I got a really good deal on this alesis multimix 16 FW last night, for less than the price of the 12-channel version! It was a demo, which is why it was so cheap. I also knew the store and its employees a little, and know they take good care of their demo equipement. Have a guarantee anyway so I can't complain! Advantages over old mixer:
-double the channels
-extra pre/post gain control, and other stuff
-cool sliders!
-MULTICHANNEL RECORDING VIA FIREWIRE!!!!!1one
The last point is the biggie! Whenever I do improvised jams among my sampers, loopers and whatnot, the old mixer just did a mixdown so it was impossible to edit the recording afterwards! That will change with this, though.
I needed to order a FW PCI card for my desktop since there's no way my laptop would be able to handle any more than four channels at once (IF that). Store guy said the ADS Pyro 1394 is pretty much one of the best I can get for these kidns of heavy applications. I can't wait to get it!

I'll try to. I can't try it's FW capabilities untill I get the card though, or I get an adapter for between the big FW cable and laptop's small FW plug in the meantime.

No idea, but the store guy was pretty insistant that this card (and he did put emphasis on the TI chipset) was really good for this kind of stuff. The store specializes into audio applications a lot more than your average comp store, so I took his word for it.
I'll give it a try if it's the boo then at least it didn't cost me a fortune

you've got to be fucking kidding me
minimum system requirements for mixer, windows XP
*stuck on 2K*
....
my laptop has XP but has a slow HDD.
meaning I'm pretty much forced to upgrade my OS
argh, I dont want to do this
since when would a MIXER require a newer OS

Well, I didn't have to leave quite yet for my show so I did a little test. Installing the drivers on the laptop was relitavelly painless. Downloaded the most up-to-date from the Alesis site rather than using the ones on the CD. I didn't use my lappy's soundcard at all! I plugged my monitors into the mixer's CTRL RM OUT and the FW of course to the lappy. The manual used Cubase as an example for a multitrack recorder, but I thought I could adapt it for Live. In the prefs, I set it to use MultiMix ASIO and then in the Input Config to use all 18 channels (the 16 regular channels plus the stereo mixdown). Plugged in three stereo sources of noise into the mixer (guitar delay on a loop with reverb, 2880 looper playing back some random junk, mashing keys on the novation synth). Set live to record all three stereo sources (six chans total) by ctrl+clicking the rec buttons and played away.
It was pretty easy! It started right away and even on the lappy's 5200RPM HDD, it wasn't blinking all that wildly. CPU usage was between 2 and 4. If I wanted to play back what I had just recorded on the three seperate Live tracks, I'd just mute the mixer's channels and playback in Live would resound through CTRL RM OUT and into the monitors. I haven't fully explored all the mixer's ffeatures and buttons though and I'm sure one of the buttons/switches around the main fader mutes the mixer but allwos me to hear my recording.
I'm looking forward to stressing it with many more channels tomorrow!

unless I'm mistaken and/or on crack, I was able to record 16 channels simultaneously in 16/44 on shitty 5200rpm laptop hard drive, with under 5% cpu utilization and no glitches
WTF
this was just in a 2-minute test, mind you

yeah it seems to work really well! I haven't tested for signal noise yet though, but I didn't notice anything bad.
hmmm, maybe I'll try and make some actual music today
