Okay my venture into surround has made some headway. Thanks em411, especially jdg for some guidance.
I've been wanting to experiment with surround. . . mostly because it seems sensible explore the format now that very low cost computer 5.1 systems are available.
Tonight I set up a second hand Logitech z 680 system that i got for about 150$. It is a reasonably good monitoring system (usually i monitor with krk's). although the bass is really overpowering, it is also true that many people listen to music like this, so it is valid to at hear a bottom heavy mix with subsonics.
I'm using digital performer, which has surround and 2 surround plugins: a 5.1 reverb as well as a 5.1 ping pong delay.
My first impression is that 5.1 is a valid musical format and provides something that stereo does not. it's not better. . . but just completely different. it is a kind of paranoid-making and paranoid-quenching experience to have sounds coming from everywhere.
I'm going to explore it a bit more. perhaps the novelty will wear off. However, some aspects of the experience are not just due to a gee whiz factor. my first impression is that the "lushness" of sounds are vastly increased. in stereo, it takes really expensive amplifiers and expensive speakers to achieve that kind of dimension.
i suppose it may not have too much relevance to the actual composition. . . except that 5.1 does change alot of rules about arrangement. so for example, voices may cohabitate at overlapping frequency spectrums, with much less mudiness.
the change in sound reminds me of what happens when one goes from 44khz to 96khz.
i'm not sure what the point of 5.1 rock music would be, although i haven't yet experienced any. i probably won't be able to any time soon as my music system doesn't do dvd's in surround, and i have no access to surround out of the studio.
so for now i'll be taking a crack at this, leaving it open ended what kind of sonic opportunities come up. i'm going to try to see if the format resolves any of the ongoing uncertainties i have about the relationship between rhythm, texture, boredom, and music structure.

after a second night of experimentation i'm concluding that some of the wacky panning effects are interesting at moments, but can be distracting. tracks that sound "big" and compressed get irritating after a while. the soundstage is so huge. . . you feel like taking a break by leaving the room.
hmmm. tomorrow night i'm going to go for more of a small ensemble sound, as opposed to an underwater cathedral

if you do every get a chance to hear some rock music in 5.1, the two most recent porcupine tree albums ("in absentia" and "deadwing") were both mixed in surround. they are both excellent examples of using the space afforded by 5.1 to place instruments and voices around the listener, rather than just using the surrounds for ambiences and effects.
highly recommended!
