--> Around 2001 i got into clone/viewlexx records. I quickly became obsessed with the vocoder. I definetly had already heard about them and loved the sound, but after hearing I-F and his old italo disco dj set's among other albums with vocoder, I needed to get one of my own. I chose the Electrix Warpfactory rack vocoder and it's awsome! i've had it since 2002 and it's still working fine. very basic, but has very cool options and great interface.

What vocoders do you all stand by? hardware/software? any unique, home made vocoders (even circuit bent)?

I'd love to see what you all use for vocoder action

izotope spectron vst - has some vocoder-ish functions, and one of the vocoders on my old Korg kp2 was nice'n'raspy.

one of my favourite uses of vocoder comes from the film 2010 - when Hal is being rebooted
i also love ring modulaters and that smex robotizer plug-in

aaaaaaaaahahahaha, holy shit. i totally forgot about that scene in 2010 when he's rebooted. it used to scare the crap out of me if the TV was turned up too loud, hehe Hal was definetly making some ill sounds.

i'm defilnetly also a big fan of ring modulaters. took me forever to find out how to get that sound, when i was younger i always thought it was a phaser.

I'll have to check out the spectron because i really like izotope's products. thanks for the info!

there was a nasty ring-mod somebody posted up here a while ago too

here we go
Makunouchi Bento

it's nasty - and scary

nice, it looks scary.

many thanks for the link, i'll definety download that.

In software, definitly the Prosoniq Orange Vocoder vst plugin is my favourite. It's very old - from '98 - but I like the sound/filters and gui. Very soft, easy and orange.

i use the boss vf1 with an analog synth as a carrier. also the NI vokator a bit much but some great sounds.

i also use the NI vokator and the prosoniq orange...

so it would be nice too, if you tell me which synth you use as a carrier-signal?

edit: man i love the roboted voice from biomechanik by anthony rother!!!

Is a ring mod equivalent to a vocoder?
They both work on a "carrier/exciter" principle -- but in practice they sound quite different.

A vocoder sounds, of course, like "Believe" by Cher or "California Love" by Dr. Dre (even though Roger Troutman actually used a Heil Talkbox for this). A ring modulator sounds like a cross between a bell and an Atari 2600, kind of "mechanical" or "robotic".

Let's not get in the vocoder vs autotune cher debate, please.

I love the vocoder in the micromod. I've got some nice patches I use all the time.

I heard a sunn o)))/Boris track which was one of the most evil uses for a vocoder ever

oh hellz yea, i remember the Prosoniq Orange Vocoder. i used it on a few tracks back in 2002. i totally neglected it after that, but now i remember how much fun i had with it. i'll have to go back and play with that again.

NI vokator looks awsome. i've never managed to get around to using it. i gotta give it a shot

For maximum intelligillibility (is that really a word? i'm too tired to know) i tend to use waveforms with a broad frequency range. Also, a bit of pink noise in the mix helps the consonant sounds come through a little more.

Here's an electropop song from 2001 using Orange, with some Reason Subtractor sound for carrier.

that song is really cool. i dig it alot

the vocoder in the dp4 is very satisfying to me, well mabye could be more satifying, but its a vocoder and i think ive goten some good sounds out of it

talk boxes with keybords sound preety funn too though :P
