i wonder if the microphone is able to pick up distant sounds.
i may need a voice recorder but it would be nice to have something to sample the occasional interesting sound (like a really loud harddrive)

buy an external mic for it?

Usually these voice recorders try to attenuate frequencies and boost vocal range sounds, and further reduce hiss by having a high shelve. on my recorder with one of those electret mics, the hiss is crazy.

On a nice quiet day, i can record conversations from 3 meters away, if they are the only dominant sound in the area and in the frequency range.

personally i'd go with an iriver recorder or a minidisc recorder at that price. but, whatever you do, throw in one of these too: link
