--> i got my new macbook pro today to replace my stolen 1 year old g4 powerbook.

its pretty slick. because cubase won't run on a macintel, i got a copy of xp pro and installed it today. it took *three* attempts. on the first attempt, i was prompted for the product key during installation. my academic copy of xp pro has the key printed on the actual CD, so i was unable to eject it and had to reboot back into osx in the middle of the install. on my second attempt (after writing the key down on a piece of paper), windows recognized there was an interuption during the first install and picked up where it left off.

apparently it missed a few steps because after the install, it wouldn't let me log in. back in boot camp, i deleted the windows partition and started again. third times a charm - installed without incident.

really, it was my fault. but the installer did screw up on the second try.

as a mac user for the last 6 or 7 years, just let me indulge in a bit of windows bashing. holy crap, it is weak. i guess i've been taking osx for granted for so long but wow, after a few hours back in windows and i'm driven mad. really, its hard to take. i guess i'm just not used to it, but it seems less well thought out, less well designed, less intuitive.

that said, the world of pc-only vsts will open up to me, which is pretty cool.

nope.
its like WINE (if u know linux)
cuz its by the same ppl.

lets u run windows apps like they're OSX apps

i see. you don't need a copy of xp running. but with parallels you do?

i can live with dual booting for now. just installed cubase sx 3 and it seems to run fine, but haven't configured it with my 828 yet. steinberg claim that sx 4 with a universal binary is on the horizon...

ableton were really cool - i emailed them to say my laptop had been stolen and they gave me a new serial number and didn't want the fifty bucks to upgrade my version of live 5 to a ub version of live 5

It's funny, as a long time Windows user, I have the same reaction to OSX whenever I use it. I usually end up cursing every 5 seconds. Ultimately, I think they both suck most of the time.

If it helps now that you will be dealing with it, Windows gets better once you turn off all the stupid shit. Which takes a while to do. Now if only someone will figure out a way to dual boot OSX on a Windows machine.
number one thing you should do with winxp is to right click ->properties->themes-> windows classic

That gets you out of teletubby land.

Apparently they have not experienced the double root-canal while having your testicles squeezed with pliers jubilant extravaganza that is GNU Debian.

i totally forgot karmafx synth - a totally free modular synth

don't be put off by the horrible presets - i think it genuinely has some really good, warm oscillators... but then i don't have a stack of analogue gear to compare it with

there is joy in that wheatfield to be had, my friend.

cubase won't run on new macs? thats shit because i was gonna buy one - and i use cubase. whats the point in me paying for a mac to install windows on it! how long will it be until cubase can run on the thing does anyone know?

My guess would be when SX4 is released, which given that screenshots have leaked from a retailer, should be before year's end.

I also read that Cubase actually runs alright under Rosetta, but I'm afraid that I haven't tried it myself.
