--> so, I just got offered a record deal from annexia records link for my cisc work.

I have no experience with these guys, but I checked out some of the artists they have and I have to say I enjoyed them. They said they've been around since 1996 but the record label appears to be fairly new.

The offer: contract + full length release CD (real cd not cdr) digipack x 500 (first pressing with 100 promo sent all around the world)

What do you guys think? I've never really dealt with anything like this so any help or insight would be appreciated. Questions to ask, maybe someone knows more about this record label.

I think I might go for it, but first I have to find out if they are cool with the fact I'm in college and a full length is gonna take a lot of time to accomplish on top of all that work. Also, I want to take a good read through their contract before I commit to anything.

anyways, exciting news I guess.

you got offered a record contract out of the blue?
How'd they hear your music?

I think it sounds cool, and if they don't put you under any monetary contractual obligations (like.. please release 3 albums in 3 years to be recorded at our in-house studio, which costs $100/hr to use) then I say "What have you got to lose????"

that looks pretty good. especially the 500 digipacks.

mental note: seems a few em411ers are geting contacted for physical releases.. ..must get shit together//

All I can say is I'm jealous, I would take it in a heart beat.

strangely enough it was totally out of the blue, I guess they heard the stuff I have up at myspace and liked it. I seem to have garnered some attention through that site lately. I've already got back to them with some questions and other info and requested a copy of the contract to look over. If there's nothing shady goin on I'll most likely do it. As you said what have I got to lose?

sounds good to me.

one of your cisc tracks popped up in my random play list this morning - such quality! you deserve it.

that myspace really seems to work if you work it.

im still at the 'hmm i dont know you and your not a musician... i think ill not approve you as a friend' stage of myspace use.

mental note number 2: must whore thy self up a bit more on the myspace

you have to be careful. don't just jump at an offer. are they going to own the recordings forever? if so, what kind of advance and royalty package are they offering you. also things to look out for... most contracts in the fine print have "packaging royalty reduction" of up to 25%, which means if you have royalties of, say, 20% whenever a physical sale is made that royalty is reduced to 15%.

who is paying for production costs? You or them? Make sure if they offer you an advance that it is non-refundable. That is key.

you should hire a lawyer to oversee everything, Dozius.

And congratulations, by the way! That is really exciting!

Totally, all I did was start leaving a comment on peoples pages that requested to add me. So it's not really much work and your not pestering people, but it tripled the amount of people checking out my music last month.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Jeff, also for putting me in your playlist.

Crafty contract writers! I pretty much already knew that I have to go over the contract with a nit comb, but it's stuff like this that I didn't even know to look for, thanks for the advice.

Send CDs to some of the other bands on the label and say "hey I like your music, how's the record label treated you so far?"

Yeah, whore it up! I've been on just as myself since March, and I'm soon going on with my music too (forget how one changes from regular to band- typical MySpace, found it by accident once while fucking around, now that I'm looking for it I can't find it again).

Also, I make friends with any band that asks me and doesn't suck. Surprisingly, most of the bands that try to add me don't suck. Pretty cool.

Sorry to jack, Dozius. Congrats on getting offered a contract!

sounds fine > appropriate for a new artist

get your 50% and sign for 3 to 5 years

you'lll do well to get digipak @ 500 copies - most manufacturers only make them for runs of 1000

congrats! i say go for it, if you're worried about the time commitment let them know and then you don't have to be concerned with letting them down.

i only add people on myspace who i have something in common with or i know and it is a great tool. things that make me suspicious about myspace friends- when they wear bikinis, when their top whatever is all strippers, or when they have over 8000 friends. then i don't usually add them.

but it is a great tool for geetting shows and deals and the like.

rad

Congratulations Dozius!
