--> Are avatars no longer in use?

If not I vote for their reinstatement....

Visual identity is important in a comunity of text.

For those of us who strongly latch onto images - they provide a quick reference signiture for the author of each text and help us to get to know each other more quickly.

Vote for this blog - to vote for avatars back....

is this spam?

I dont miss them yet, to be honest. Maybe I will, but I dont yet...

i vote.
if this is more community controlled then the blogs with the higher votes will get darker and "more visible" and sometimes perhaps admin will adjust or modify that way....we'll see if its that kind of thing.... I don't know

I'm pretty sure that it's a bandwidth thing for em/admin. I too think that they are important, how small would could we go? Could we store the Avatar's offsite?

i think admin could bring avatars back and put a rule one cannot change it more than once a month

Mmm, I see many of you still have their avatar, and some even have more than 1 pic attached to their profile (Like you Room) .. how did you do that ?

mbazzy, that's a blog pic, not an avatar pic

they made the forums easier to read and to keep up with who is saying what, and added to the warm feel and 'useability' of the site.

i hated the 'new look/clean style' option on the old update of em411, never used it.

i know its only a little pic, but that was a major part of the site IMO, it gave a more 'personal' touch to what is otherwise just a load of text... especially it being just a grey page, makes it seem rather dull......like every other forum on teh internet
like soft says they made it easier to follow a thread, but... you'll get used to glancing at the shape of someones username as text soon enough, it's just a period of adjustment, i like the 'serious', tidy, clean, datacentric look of this place.

truthfullly, i don't care. i've used the clean interface from the moment it arrived.

Perhaps there's another solution. What if we could each choose a color for our little bold name under each post and the a color for the text box. I'm not suggesting we allow ANY color, but perhaps The Admin could choose a color pallet for each... subdued colors for the background and bold colors for the name.

Then at least you could look at it and quickly see that "room" is the guy with the burgundy colored name and light grey bg while bsr is a royal blue name with a light blue bg, etc...

yeah, i don't miss avatars. like nagrom, i've been using the 'clean' interface since it arrived. i like it for the following reasons:

1. when i'm em411ing from my parents farm on dial-up, page load times are faster (i guess i could turn image loading off, but with 'clean' i don't really have to)

2. when i'm em44ing at work, the clean interface is much more 'business' looking. crazy avatars look decidedly un-worklike.

but i understand their importance for others. i doubt we'll see them again though because of bandwidth/design issues. it'd be interesting to know how many people used the avatar interface vs the clean interface in the last version of the site.

I liked the avatars. but i don't miss them. I think the same way as bsr about it: that it's something most ppl will get used to soon.

another alternative would be signatures or ~subtitles~ other boards use both.

i'm not fond of signatures, myself, but the subtitles are fun.

flies - nerf herder
s/t like taht.

I actually wish images could be posted inline, though I could do without personal avatars (this arrangement would be like 4chan or one of the other old, venerable, image boards.)

Amendment: personal avatars should be acceptable, as long as the person is wearing sunglasses and no shirt.
