Here is a video from the very first time that my SK-1 gets connected to my circuit bent Sega Megadrive.
You can see which one is the gfx chip in the picture below. Two sides of the chip just cause the machine to lock up or reset, but the other two sides pretty much give interesting visual glitches. The game is still completely functional.
Some glitches mess with the main sprites, causing the character, bad guys and bullets to all glitch up, or turn invisible. Other bends only effect the background layers, again causing corruption, trails, invisibility and funky letters. I'll try get some video of these effects done.
One of the sound chips is the larger sized chip to the left of the gfx chip in the picture. Mostly bending this one causes the games to freeze, but Xenon2 still works fine just with weirdly minimal corrupt soundtrack. Very cool actually.
Overall, I'd say these bends are stable and predictable, but what happens exactly seems to differ from game to game and how they are programmed to use the hardware. If you make a momentary gfx glitch, everything gets corrupted in the games level, up to about a screen away. By the time you scroll there, the cart reloads the gfx over the corrupted ones, I guess. I found other ones that'd reduce or remove one of the RGB channels, tinting the picture somewhat. One glitch caused the TV picture to go all curvy towards the top.
This was quite easy bending, but watch out for the soldering, it's a surface mount chip and its really really easy to stick the legs together. I've had to leave a spare leg inbetween a lot of my wires to avoid soldering permanent bends in place. This is a shame cos a lot of interesting bends were between neighbouring pins. You can follow the traces away from the chip in a couple of places.
