i dunno about you but global warming/climate change and polution kinda scares me....it always has. and im glad there is so much about it in the press these days. but most of the world still doesnt seem to give a shit. i think it is a very very serious problem, and maybe we are past the 'point of no return'
i dont want to rant on about it for ages....ill leave that up to you, if you wish
i heard about this yesterday and i just wish there were more business men like him.
link
no doubt someone will chime in with some facts about why i should hate him.
anyway, just thought id share incase anyone missed the story.

he's doing the right thing but sadly, owns a multi billion pound airline business which has no doubt done significant damage to the world we live in. seems odd when really rich people get applauded for doing things with their money which they SHOULD be doing anyway.
but hopefully others will follow

So he is pledging $3billion of all Virgin company profits over the next 10 years to help sort out the environment? So we have to consume his companies products & services, which cause the damage, in order to save the planet? He is pushing so that everyone will now favour Virgin products because he has made this pledge. Free advertisement.
Its a bit like a crack dealer pledging all his future profits to clean up the estate where he serves up.
Rich people and their empty pledges that are more about publicity.
I cant help but sing the chorus from The Specials - Pearl's Cafe

"The Virgin boss said he would commit ALL profits from his travel firms, such as airline Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Trains, over the next 10years."
he stands to make no profit from his travel business over the next 10 years. that, to me, is quite a significant thing for a business man to do.
and yes its kinda ironic.
but....'we' are going to 'consume' his services anyway. and if not his, then someone else's 'services' who would probably keep all the profit.
the world would be in worst shape if he just gave up the 'travel' business.....cos we'd all have to travel with a company that didnt give a shit.

he may not be saviour of the universe, but at least that's 3 billion that'll be doing some good rather than lining his pockets, or buying him shopping centers and high-heeled sneakers.

Personally, Im looking forward to the apocolyptic backlash from this planet that wipes out out in the bat of an eyelid. We are so egotistical and narcissistic that we think the universe evolves around us [every creationist belief], that we are the end of evolution [again, creationsit beliefs that we are created in the image of our creator or that our creator is the image of us] and that we have to define ourselves by trying to control something that we are just a very infinitely small part of.
If a species cannot grasp that they are dysfunctional and are preciptating their own destruction then why fight it?

I love how there is no mention of how he wants to start space tourism...Because rockets defintiely dont warm the atmosphere or launch tons of pollution from the fuel containers or space debris.. Him and Elton John are smoking cigarettes and strangling dolphins on the back of their luxury yacht made of chinese children.

So how is a billionaire promising the future profits of companies that he owns, that in the pursuit of their everyday business are a part of the problem of causing the very situation that he is promising the money to try and fight actually doing anything?
Like my earlier analogy, its like a crack dealer offering all future profits of all his businesses to help clean up the estate that is the centre of his business. So everyone says, "ooh...what a generous felah. Lets all buy his crack and only use his prostitues" without thinking that maybe he is at the epicentre of the problem and using his 'facilities' is whats causing the shit in the first place.
If you want to 'save the environment' then stop consuming products and using services that destroy it and giving any money to corporations that indulge in those practices.
And if you are going to post that making that choice is impossible then save the planet now and kill yourself. Apathy and pessimism are not valid answers nor excuses. Neither is relying on empty gestures from 'philanthropic billionaires'.
