--> I'm feeling limited with only Reason and nothing else.

Thus, I've decided that I will be acquiring three things in the next month or three.
-A Simple Keyboard controller (M-Audio Oxygen8 V2)
-A Drum/Loop controller (M-Audio Trigger Finger)
-A nice sequencer (I like Ableton Live a lot)

This will also aid me in looking to start doing live performances (when I'm good enough).

Any advice for a total newbie concerning cheap, yet effective, studio gear?

an espresso machine.

i second the trigger finger. make sure you grab m-audio's enigma editor from their website too - it's very useful.
ableton is an excellent program - but, if you can try out a few different sequencers before you buy....

i also love my behringer bcr2000 knob box...but a lot of people hate behringer gear. faderfox do a nice line of midi controllers - not so cheap tho.

i think the most important thing is to think about how you want to work - live and in teh studio, and choose gear that fits your style.
good luck!

also an espresso machine is cool.

and for true ponce value - you'll need a grinder.

screw the m-audio stuff. their keys are so cheap feeling.

link that thing does more than both them anyway

if you do anything with weak ass signals you may want to get a di box. i have an audiobuddy from m-audio, but if i could do it all over again, i'd go with a sansamp. both very cheep, but makes your audio inputs sound way better.

@energygiant: I'm on a tight budget, but that looks awesome. :D

you can go for a m-audio axiom controller... it has knobs and pads (you can save on the trigger finger), plus semi weighted keys. i have the 25 and i'm really satisfied with it (well, i mean, if it had faders instead of knobs i'd be completely satisfied with it). it's alittle bigger than the oxigen, but it's worth the hassle.

I would say if you're still going to be sticking with Reason for the time being, it might be worth the cash for a Novation Remote SL - it works super well with Reason and lets you get away from the screen a bit - makes Reason feel a bit more like a real synth. It has drum pads as well - they're tinier and not as cool as MPC/trigger finger type pads but they do the job.

get the akai and screw m audio

fuck that akai.. its the worst ever.
those are not the same pads as teh MPC.
its the same pads as maxipads.

the mpd24, which is theoretically coming out soon, will have the pads of the mpc2500. That is, according to the marketing hype. I will let you know as soon as it comes out, because as fun as hitting my keyboard with my fingers is, I really need to get me some pads.

I bought this for my for my wife for her birthday...i really like the key action-solid, semi-weighted--but the knobs, although sturdy, are not endless encoders. I've never tried to do any kind of configuration customization, either, so i don't know if its a pain with that..
