so last week after seeing filarion and p's comments on scan's blog i was finally pushed over the edge and decided i MUST HAVE MONOME!!!1111
i had wanted one since they were first annouced, before they were available, but once they came out at $500 they were just out of my comfort zone on what i usually spend on gear. i knew it looked amazing in the video, but there were a lot of questions about how it works (can it do more than 8 steps?) and what the software for it is like (since I dont have max/msp).
i hadnt been to the monome site in awhile so i hadnt seen the screenshots of some of the software.

YUMMY!!
once i saw those i knew i had to have one as soon as possible, so i immediately listed up my nord lead rack for sale to squeeze that $500 price tag down into my comfort zone. so i went to the monome site to see how to order it and you have to send in an "order request" they assemble a unit for you and get back to you for payment when it is ready to ship. that was saturday, i have probably checked my gmail box a million times since then hoping to get the its ready to ship email, but alas, they are a small operation and pretty busy.
so i have been telling trent (my studio partner/music buddy) about the 40h all week and trying to describe it (impossible) so i emailed me the links to the video yesterday morning. i asked him at the studio last night if he had seen it, and he hadn't yet, so i showed him

and

and by the end of the second video he was like "how cool would it be to have two of them?" so i am all "well actually, you can hook two up to the same computer and they can act as one long one, or you could hook yours to your macbook and mine to my ibook and have twice the sounds, or run different software on each and tagteam it like we are teh road warriors
so then he is all "Tell them to make it two" that's right, he has to have one TOO! how cool is that, not only am i getting a monome, but up at the studio on nights we jam, we gonna be runnin doubles.
so i email them this morning to see if i can change the quantity to 2 and they just wrote back that our units will be ready to ship at the begining of next week.
so anyways, i just had to share.
i will definately post a new blog with pictures, videos and all kinds of goodness after they arrive. it might be a month or two though, because i plan to spend every second of every day playing with that thing once it comes.

i definately want to check your mapd template.
im going to wait til about a month after they come then do another max/msp trial. then at the end of that i am going to finally go through with my plan of kidnapping a student so i can get the student 9 month trial thingy.
i did the 30 day trial on an old computer like a year and a half ago and loved max, but got bidule because of the price. sure miss the waveform windows and multisliders though. once i get back into max/msp id definately like to collab on some 40h patches. i still have all my old stuff i made somewhere when i did the trial. it was mostly groove~ objects and random slicers, etc. one was a multislider that changed the loop start point. basic, but fun stuff.

since I've mainly been preparing my liveset using MLR rewired into a single Ableton Live channel with some sends I haven't delved into developing patches for it at all yet, but once I have some routine in the liveset I'll try and develop a max patch that lets me feed back information from Ableton Live to the 40h - the existing patches are so fun already, flin, flip, ksd (!!! really great), 64step.. they all rock.

i was trying to tell from the ksd demo video on youtube what that one does. the apps listing on the resource site doesnt offer much info either.
i swear i have watched every video i can find hundreds of times and already read every post in their forum. i feel like a ceack fiend and next week cant come soon enough.

KSD lets you randomly generate (or program) 7x7 sequences of MIDI data in variable length sending out on up to 7 different midi channels/ports. the top row transposes all MIDI sequences the way you want (different modalities etc included). the rightmost button column switches between trigger and toggle for the various patterns. very very good program for getting new sounds out of your synths (my nord modular loves ksd). grab all of the max patches and check them out before you actually have the 40h, that gives you a headstart once you have it at home.

ooooh yeah, please post pics/movies!
I really really want one. since I saw it for the first time. it's a pretty steep price but I *may* just go ahead with it. can't live without risks right? I'm not a huge max/msp fan (mostly due to my inability to learn it properly) but if it has apps like that step sequencer and an ever-expandable repertoire, then..........

its $500, but they are doing a limited run of 400 units total evar. from the updates on their forum it sounds like most of the first 200 of those are gone at this point. they have/had another feature in the current/next (i havent checked yet) REUP mag about it.
they are going to move on to making bigger and other devices so if you decide in 6 months or a year that its not for you, you could probably get all of what you paid back, probably even make a profit once they are gone and people catch on/more and more people make cool max/msp patches for it.
except i can tell for sure that i want one and will use it on a daily basis. i downloaded 64 step and checked it out and its the awesomes.
if you are on the fence cloud, you should check out:

thats the list of the apps for it now, some of them have descriptions and even screenshots for a few.
there is more than just the few they show off in the videos.
the videos dont have commentary so you have to watch close but there is a lot more that it can do that you might miss in the videos. like more than 8steps, in the mlr video other than changing the loop lengths and turning on/off clips, he actually records a sequence of key presses on the fly then lets that new beat play for a bit.
