--> Continuing the 'shoegazer' theme thats been running this week, as promised, here is one track from the video of a gig I did with a band I used to be in, back in 1990.

The sound quality is a bit quiet. Its because the video I used wasn't the greatest quality [its seen better days like when the world was powered by steam] and I couldnt get some video editing software installed to clean it up. I might have another go at it at a later date, using another video. [apparently my flatmate has one thats much better]

Also, here's a local newspaper cutting of a review of the gig which I had to edit in pshop so it was all visible on the page [the guy used columns all over the place due to the adverts]. Its a shame I dont have an exact date for the gig but it was about may 1990, if memory serves me right. I'll have a dig around in my archives ot see if I can find out.

I havent seen the other guys about 1996/7 but the singer/rhythm guitarist went on to form a band called 'Travis Cut' that seem to have had limited success.

Hope you enjoy it. Its brought back a lot of memories for me anyhow.

Also, Ive got a interview/training day tomorrow for a new job that could see me pretty much travelling all over the country for the next few months.

in 1990, i wasn't even able to buy lottery tickets. you tetchy old man.

Yup. Im probably old enough to be your dad.

In fact, whats your mums name again?

Robert

Hahaha.....

hello son.

nice curtains dude. interestingly my first ever gig was at a battle of the bands in morecambe. in the heats we beat an electric violinist whose band hadn't turned up. he went out on stage to play 40 minutes of solo electric violin, in a venue which was called the superdome because it was a big dome with acoustics to match, a brave man.
the dome link
we also beat the local favourites, a rap metal band who i went to school with and were all older than me. we kicked their puny arses.

in the final we were beaten by some jumped up pop band who went on to go to the paul mccartney school of performing arts. they were rubbish. but had a sax player and a girl singer who was knobbing one of the judges. we got loads of shit off a metal band who we were sharing our dressing room with as we were all roughly aged 15 and they were in their 30s. they thought we would be some crappy indy band amateurs. we kicked their arses as well.

although i don't think music should be competitive i think battle of the bands can be fun. the mix of bands you get is always funny and i really enjoyed the experience of playing to people. so much so i still do it today.

i really enjoyed watching this vid as it brings back so many happy memories of playing in bands to rooms full of people.

cheers zanf!

oh and you know theres always a place to stay in leeds. i got rid of the ex-girlfriends head kicking father you will be pleased to know.

Zanf, why do you keep staring at your shoes?!

....oooooohhhhhhh right.

I really enjoyed the video, thanks for posting it. It does bring back memories...of when I used to pick on shoe gazer kids because I was a dipshit industrial fiend.

thanks!!

A funny story that really relates is that we got through to the semis and were up against a MOR band [the name will come to me later no doubt - edit: it has "Essence"]. We kicked their arses which was funny [they were all in their 30's and would be quite happy playing the pub next door to me now] and their roadie, who actually had a tshirt with the bands name and 'roadie' written on it, had a go and started shoving our mate who had driven us over in his VW camper, saying stuff like, "you're not even a proper roadie and your band are shit".

We lost in the final, to a band that consisted of members who all worked at the venue called 'Oi Oi Saveloy!' [they were good though].

In the time I was with them, we supported The Moonflowers at one gig and 2 weeks after I quit, they supported Swervedriver in Stevenge. Internal politics was what ended my time in the band. I couldnt get along with the singer. The other 2 and myself were more into experimenting but he was so into 'Teenage Fanclub' that it was a hard path so I went my own way. I started messing with trackers on my mates amiga500 soon after and spent more time going to parties than gigs. And the rest, as they say, is too boring to talk about.

because they were a class pair of Dr Maertin boots

This reminds me of Jesus Jones, I miss that band.

Your guitar player looks like Doogie Hauser.

i liked that alot, especially the end part...which one are you?

i kept wanting to hear some MBV pitch dips in there..

this makes me wish i wasn't on "hiatus" from my band...

I'm the one who drops his bass at the end with it landing heavily on the singers guitar & it pissed him right off. [Im on the left]

you are my rock god

That end has the most blatant case of flanger abuse I've ever seen.

Pretty cool, though.

ML - I always wanted to be your cock rod.... I mean rock god.

Thanks Roshi - I could go into how the singer had the bad ego habit of having his guitar louder than EVERYTHING else which really fucked things up. Especially as he wasnt great at playing [Ben - the lead guitarist was an amazing talent] and the flanger at the end demonstrates that but it would just be petty so I wont.

Ive started a new job so wont have great amounts of time but I want to rip this properly and all the rest of the gig as well.
