i'm axing for my brother- he is really good guitar player but wants to also use live with a midi controller. he has a keyboard, but would rather use a guitar to get midi info into live. i looked online and saw quite a few options- but are any of them any good?

i had the yamaha ez-ag. it was ok. but had some bad flaws such as sending midi note data when you just press one of the fret buttons, making playing it as you would a conventional guitar very hard.

Ive been looking into MIDI guitar systems (as in hex pickup->midi) for awhile now but havent taken the plunge yet. Here's what I discovered in my research. Most MIDI guitar systems will send your sequencer a bunch of dirty data that makes editing a pain. They use a system where pitch bend messages are sent immedialty after note-ons to compensate for any pitch tracking errors. Not a real big deal if youre using it live, but your data is going to be all messy if you want to edit it. Any MIDI guitar enthusiasts with other opinions? Im still waiting for the confidence to buy that gi-20 or axon.

midi is a pain from guitars. i got a roland guitar synth which is different. it tracks really well and was made in the 80s. will set you back
alot of money tho as its a full on analogue synth.
the roland guitar pickups are pretty standard though. i would go with that.

I am building one based on the midibox.
I would think the roland pickup thing would be the quickest/easiest.

Seriously, don't buy anything until you check out the Axon vids on youtube.

I tried a Roland GI-20/GK-3 a couple of months ago. I was amazed.

Another one I've seen with excellent tracking(in good condition, naturally) is the Casio MG-510. The PG line actually is compatible with the VZ synth line. No idea what they sell for nowadays though.

In MaggotAppleWonderland, we use the Roland GI20 on bass. It's great but sometimes the analog bass signal still comes through the mix (which isn't really a big deal). With the GI20, each string can be routed to seperate vst's which we route in Abelton. Its a great little device for sure.
Your brother may want to look at the Brian Moore guitars that have the Midi Pickup already installed (I think they are less than $800 here in the US) and they are a very nice guitar and then just find a used GI20 and you're good to go.
