thread starter

it dawned on me today that our dear mr. james has a discography spanning over 20 years. that does a few things for me:

*makes me feel old
*impresses me
*makes me glad that much of that work still sounds fresh
*makes me wonder where it'll lead to

the thought interested me because so many of our EM influences have died over the last few years and i don't feel like there are many contemporaries that i personally feel influenced by. what are our musical successors going to be influenced by in 20 years? will it even matter by then?

he's the only artist i want to see live before i die, but i haven't.
i recall the folklore of him setting up all his homemade machinery & bent synths with wires going everywhere.
i don't think it would be the same seeing him play live nowadays with a Viao

but his music was always best to me coming down off of psychedelic drugs. whether you left an ecstasy/LSD fueled party...you get home, take a shower...pop on selected ambient works...and try to go to bed. Operative word is TRY

Happy bersday aphex!!!

the best thing he ever did was selected ambient works vol. II

other stuff is good, but not as good as this work.

haha

lulz it haz teh apex beetz thatz why iz guud rite?

ummm i dunno- i was drunk last night- trying to be funny
i never got into saw2 that much - its really good though but i hardly ever feel like putting that tape on
saw1 seems a lot more classic to me - the tunes stick in my head and make me smile
its more about the bass than teh beetz

I'm a sucker for Drukqs Disc 1.

I just came back to SAW2 because of this thread and it's really startling how much different it is from anything else I have ever heard, even after hearing it perhaps a hundred times. it's not even like music, it's like poetry or some kind of spell or incantation. it has magical power.
man, you guys always talk about SAW2 like this...to me it just sounds like the most crap ambient album ever. Like a Brian Eno demo tape from when he was 17.
I'll give it another try.

I have this compilation called "classics" and it's like all his old techno and it's awesome!

I just got Caustic Window - "Compilation", some mp3's of Universal Indicator stuff, and Analogue Bubblebath stuff. Along with "Classics", fucking great I agree!

Brian Eno is crap ambient? Maybe you just think ambient is crap? nuttin wrong with that... I don't like all of it.. but it's moments really shine without being too flashy.. hence ambient?

get a better stereo?

needs more cowbell

i like SAWII because of a lot of the vibes he brings out. it's not complicated, it's very ethereal, it's really emotional at many points (holy shit 'rhubarb' has made me cry.. i am sure many will agree). license i like the way you put it.. as being a magical incantation. i always felt like it was special. it's kind of how i like to approach my music as a sort of alchemy mixed with ritual.

actually now that i think about it, the only other richard james music i still listen to besides SAWII is the polygon window disc. god damn that is some great music.
