they should get a deal with Starbucks where if you buy a venti latte you get an iTunes card that you redeem for free Radiohead remix track.

I think its brilliant.
They're getting thousands of people to pay them for the privelege of promoting them.
Farts, you can promote my band too if you pay me $5.
No, wait, i actually kinda hate myspsace spam and wouldn't want my name associated to it. Well, maybe for enough money. Pay me $5000 and I'll let you spam myspace.

It's smart from a marketing perspective, but also a bit sociopathic. What irks me is it sort of presents itself as this cool thing for the community, when it's actually entirely self-serving and one-sided.

This whole thing has really bummed me out:
At first I thought it was a great idea -a contest to remix Radiohead! Cool. I'm in! Then I find out you have to pay for the samples. Well ok I guess that sort of makes sense because no major artist is going to give away the parts of their songs I suppose.
Then I find out you have to buy them from itunes. Radiohead selling 'stems' on itunes? That right there tells you there is something way wrong. A supposedly forward thinking band dealing with the enemy of all working musicians. Hmmm. But my label really wanted me to do a mix for whatever reason so I went ahead and bought the stems. I had to give my CC number to itunes. Along with prostitution and slaughtering animals, giving money to itunes was something I swore I'd never do. So I felt really bad about that.
This leads me to the part where I'm trying to deal with their stupid DRM filled MP4 itunes formated stems. You cannot change these into wavs or mp3s even. That doesn't matter if you are using Logic or Garageband or even Live but I really wanted to use Reason because honestly I haven't mastered Live in anyway shape or form yet and I wanted to bust this remix out as fast as I can. I admit to being real stupid with computers and what not, but to tell you the truth, this whole thing has turned me off.
I went to listen to In Rainbows so I could check the Nude track out again and I couldn't even press play. I now hate Radiohead as much as I already hated itunes. I couldn't care less what their thinking was at this point. It's simply a lame idea. It reeks of boardroom marketing ideas disguised as independent thinking with some "by the people for the people" sugar coating on top.
So let's take a look at what realistically is happening here:
People are paying money to remix Radiohead. Thousands and thousands of them of them.
If you don't have itunes, you do now. And now they have your credit card, email and a link to your computer.
We have to vote for the tracks (i.e. do the leg work).
Radiohead will listen to an unspecified amount of the 'best' tracks.
And then....
Well there is no mention of what happens to the lucky bloke who wins this "opportunity" that Radiohead, Garageband, and itunes are givnig us.
I can't bring myself to finish my mix. I am disheartened by these goings on.
