Hi all.I am about to start rehearing soon for playing live so i'm putting my setup together atm.It comprises of my laptop running live an electribe emx and a korg R3 with a focusrite saffire le.The hardware will be routed into live and running audio tracks and vsts.Haven't quite figured out how i'm going to set up live yet but i work best with it when it comes to arranging and i've got a few live mixes i've already made,i just haven't played them yet.So i want to use the laptop but is it a good idea?If not is there a hardware alternative? It would need to have the audio inputs and outputs to connect my gear to the pa.This is where i think the laptop is a good solution,i have a good qualty interface with all the power of live and vsts, audio and fx.The only issue is reliability
My laptop is very stable but not the most powerful and i'll be testing i out thoroughly before actually playing live,i'll have it set up to give the best performance without overloading the processor.
What possible alternatives would you suggest?I was looking at the MC808 but i read it's got it's problems. The sampling looks really good on it though and i could transfer stuff from live and maybe run my audio tracks from that, leave the emx at home and use that instead with the R3.I like the idea of the MC-808 but i've heard bad things about roland gear so i'm on the fence about them.Is there anything else that combines synthesis fx,and sampling, has usb and can resample live(apart from an RS7000)?
I'd rather use hardware live tbh,i'd always be concerned that my laptop was going to f*ck up at any moment.Plus i find it's quicker to setup and anyway that's what it's designed for!I'll use my laptop in the meantime but i think i'm going to go all hw eventually.
Anyway,do you reckon using a laptop live is a good idea?Any advice welcome
Cheers,
-T

I find nothing wrong with those little behringers.
Keep it small, imo.
Sadly, if your laptop is the MIDI beat clock master, if it goes down your whole song will go down as well.

i am big into microphones / fx and sounds generated by me...grunts / screams / singing etc...i like the flexibility a lot. a variety of mics. i am all hardware myself too, although i use an mp3 player as a 'backing track' quite often...so i guess if a laptop / mp3 player fails, i can always sing into my mics for a bit

electribe esx + peavey grabber (beat sync'd looper) + nord micro + minimixer = endless possibilities (could both sequence the micro from esx and use the micro as an FX unit - layer, loop, and repeat...)
Macbook (built in mic) + ableton + sooperlooper + DIY footpedal = endless possibilities"
The first one sounds good.I have been thinking about an esx recently and a nord micromodular has been on my list for a while! Not heard of the peavey so i'll check those out, cheers.I think as i have put a few sets together in live i will have to use it.I think i'll record everything into live and take the synth and padkontrol to start with.Get an echo indigo card and plug the synth in,audio outs to the pa.Then i'll look at getting a mixer if i want to add other gear to my setup. The pk and the R3 give me plenty to perform and keeps the setup simple. My laptop will be an uber-groovebox with the pk and pci card.
Oh yeah!

There is that. The places i'll be playing at first are fairly rfelaxed, open mic nights and events by friends.I want to test the water first before i dive in,as much for my music as the gear.So the laptop will get me started and if it goes well ill eventually expand the setup. There's no point in shelling out for new gear until there is something worth shelling out for ;)

The peavey grabber is what really makes the setup flexible - it's a beat synced sampler that can automatically grab 1, 2, 4, or 8 beats worth of audio. It's smart enough to be able to sync to incoming audio. You could layer synth loops, beat loops, and do wankamatic solos on top of all of that.
Throw in turntables and you're pretty much unlimited.

I've got a behringer ubb1002 that i play live with. it was dirt cheap, it works, its dependable, it's packed with features, and it sounds like shit. its also missing mute/solo. I'm looking at upgrading to a soundcraft epm6, which looks like a great mixer for a live setup. a nice dj mixer (rane, allen & heath, etc) would be ideal, but your talking very serious money.
I play an all hardware liveset centered on an emx. get a mixer, add an fx unit and a second drum machine and youd be pretty solid for an all hardware set. the second machine is key for a seamless set--toss the beat over the the second drum machine for a transition, fade out emx, switch to the next pattern, fade emx back in. a looper could serve the same purpose, and allow for other wild nonsense too.

Thanks for all the suggestions. As my laptop is the hub of my music i'm going to use it live short term and see how it goes,at least for rehearsing then i can see how well setup works.I like the idea of using a little mixer so i just got Guru for beats on the sw side,it bridges the gap nicely between my hw and the 'puter. If i can get away with i'll just take my laptop and the padkontrol,i can always record my beats into live and slice and sequence with Guru,it's perfect for live use.I figured if i buy another piece of hw i'm going to have to invest time in learning it before using it and i know live well and i have mixes ready to go,it would be a lot of work to bounce, export and load my tracks into a hw sampler.I think the only one that would do what i want is the MC808 at this stage.
@Samski,thats one of the reasons i bought the R3,it has the vocoder and it is possible to bypass it and use the mic as a normal condenser!Iv'e yet to explore everything it can do but it's a rockin synth.
Any cheers y'all, you've definitely given me a few things to think about and i'll come back to this when i am thinking of expanding my setup, should it comes to that. ;)
Peace!
