how would or did you approach a recordlabel?
i'm so far i completed my cd, it's gone for master right now and the cover is done.
but now? should i just mail recordlabels with a sample like:
"hi i juts finished my cd and i wan't to bring it out on your label, listen to this sample please."
or should i do it less direct?
or should i maybe just do some gigs and wait for them to find me? maybe invite them to a gig?
should i wait with printing my cd untill i found a label or can i already print like 25 to sell to friends&family?
and is it risky to upload songs from this cd on myspace or so?

dunno.
a buddy of mine sent material to ninja tune and got signed.
it's really not all that it's cracked up to be.
more money made off of licensing music for stupid tv.
the best idea is usually to share.
giving without business intention at first.
making mixes, playing live, enjoying music.
post material...
or stfu.

That's exactly how i want to approach it, go the live route and if people enjoy my music i'll take it from there. Unfortunately things have prevented me from accomplishing my goals.

The nearest 'hit' i ever had was sending a 3 track Doublejo(H)ngrey demo to International DJ Gigolo...
They liked it and passed it onto DJ Hell to listen to, but he must not have dug it cos he never got back.
That was after we sent no less then 200 copies to every vaguely relevant label we could think of.
We got some advice off an ex member of the Inspiral Carpets (that's his job now) who reccomended generating a buzz around ourselves. Put on nights, play at them, put out releases, get reviews, get local press interested in our parties, etc etc. It didn't work of course, but i think it;s a sound idea.

All of these are good ways of approaching it - I think it definitely depends on the type of music your doing... a band should definitely got the lots of live gigs, trying to build themselves into a regional name that people know, hook up with other bands, try to get on with festivals, etc... a solo electronic bedroom artist - eh - the live act isn't really as easy an option - and not necessarily... um... necessary.
Getting noticed, having a strong solid demo for when it finally gets in the right hands (with contact info on everything), networking with artists that are similar to you, a good short promo sheet describing who you are what you do what you've done...
Also - step back and think about what you really want to do... are you trying to get onto a large label, tour, selling in brick and mortar stores? Do you want to work with a much smaller label that will allow you full creative control? Do you want to play live and tour across the country or world? Or want to be able to write your music and reach people only through the recordings? Do you want to "live" off of your music as your job? That's a dream of so many people - but there's a nice big catch with that whole concept - I opted for the day job route many years ago for stability, health care, etc... and very importantly to me - to be able to always have music as my favorite thing to do - my very passionate hobby - not my job that puts food on the table... Many people do make it in music as their sole job - and that's fantastic.
Anyway - I'm rambling again - but my point I'm trying to toss out there is it's important to know where you want to go with your music and then start moving in that direction.

labels are a byproduct of a successful live career. Belive it or not, myspace listens rarely count.(let me smell yo dick, obviously being the exception) How does one contact people in neighboring cities for gigs? MYSPACE!!!! it's an INVALUABLE tool for networking. If your shit is good, people will book you. look for persons who are always posting flyers for shows, they're the ones you want to talk to.

copy and paste the good part into .txt files. then label it: "good advice on ____"
that's what I always do.

I think that in general, i'm too finicky and particular of a person to get involved with a label. My life, like most people's feels only partially in my control. I relish the parts of my life that permit me the complete freedom and abandon of a kindergartener. I don't know if I want to taint that for anything. That said, making money with music would be awesome. But my creativity is a fickle thing, and not well suited to having deadlines or expectations placed on it. I just don't think I could produce much if I felt obligated to.
