Define the music of Beck! What is it to You?

Replies

I am trying not to laugh that elronhubbard is commenting.

But points well made.

beck: music for listening to bad music

beck: music to read jdg posts to

beck: music that is probably in jdg's itunes

BECK IS AWESOME AND HATER'S NEED TO FUCK OFF.
I'M GONNA CONVERT BECK TO CHRISTIANITY AND IT WILL BE AWESOME.

beck: music that blurs the distinction between christianity and scientology

I agree with astroid's last post.

way back at Fredo:
"extreme complexity, contradiction, ambiguity, diversity, interconnectedness or interreferentiality,"

I don't see how Madonna is any of those things. "Reinventing yourself" is not post-modern. "liquidation of referentials" (Baudrillard) and self-contradiction are the hallmarks.
I agree with Djugel that Momus > Beck. Still, Odelay was a pillar in my childhood and Stereopathetic Soulmanure is genius.

stereopathic soulmanure speaks to me.

ok. so i love beck MUSIC; i do think its rediculous to worship aliens though. but that's really beside the point.
lol nagrom. WTF wrong with madonna? i also think George Michael kicks ass (not the arrested development/juno one either) =)...

modonna is Not Quite Postmodern.

hey you suck

Al Gore defined postmodernism as "the combination of narcissism and nihilism". That's the best definition I've heard yet. I don't see Beck as that. Madonna, certainly the narcissism part, but the essential nihilism seems lacking.

The best *song lyrics* that exemplify postmodernism per Gore's definition, are Prince's 1999. "2000 zero zero party over, oops, out of time. So tonight we're going to party like it's 1999". There it is: nihilism and narcissism. The chorus of REM's "End of the World" sums it up pretty well too: "It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine." Everything's falling to hell, and I don't give a shit, because all I care about is me, get me another beer, woo hoo!-- postmodernism in a nutshell.

That's rubbish. Postmodernism is without a central narrative or organisation, and nothing to do with narcissism and nihilism. Do you usually regard Al Gore as the authoritive voice on art, literature, theology and philosophy?
