thread starter

what are actuall differences nowadays?
i'm a total noob when it comes to programming but i really wan't to learn because i have a couple of ideas i can't realise in live.
so i was interested in max but i totally can't afford it. and then i saw pd(pure data).
is it so hard to learn that i would be better of sticking that time into working for an actual boss to make the money for max/msp or aren't the differences that big?
i wan't to use it for live sampling purposes(easy sampling of musicians and easy messing with that audio). maybe their are people using pd for that who can tell me more?

i mean i don't agree with randal's assumption: "max is overpriced". i think Live is overpriced. Not Max.

Yes, Live is CRAZY overpriced. Esp. since they come out with a new ver. every year that you "have to" upgrade to.
Max is overpriced if you compare it to Pd, tho. ;)

yeah ok... ok. but, if the thread has to take that direction: i'm am really underpriced most of the time ;)

true, true. I like ur logic! Truthfully, they are both excellent software packages no matter how you look at it.

ok:

pd is like getting into a toyota camry that starts right up, and then driving wherever you need to go.

max/msp is like getting into a crazy cadilac suv but you have giant boxing gloves glued to your hands.

allright: the camry has no radio or ac either, and roll up windows. and in the cadilac you might have medium sized boxing gloves glued to your hands.

but the camry is free.

ha ha ha .

LOL

i'm wondering which version of pd i should download
you can change the fade and animation times, etc., in Max 5 to '0 ms' so the GUI behaves much snappier. check out the preferences.

Yes. I love Pd and I use it... but that's a good way of describing its default look.

NoSpin:
Download the Pd-Extended version from link . They just released the new version today. It has a library of externals and abstractions (which you'll learn about after some reading) to give you extra tools. It also is easier to read than it used to be.

thanks. i downloaded pd-vanilla earlier and worked through some tutorials. i'll try this one out now

are there any big changes in this new version?

definitely get extended instead of vanilla, cus there are much more objects moog~, which is a good filter, and gate which is a useful thing in max etc.
