I definitely need one, right now i have my R3 connected to the RS7000 and my sh32 connected to the audio ins of my R3! This setup works but i need more inputs to run audio into my SP555 so i can sample. There's a few budget mixers but are they really good enough for recording? Besides i want a mixer with a decent amount of channels and connectivity for outboard fx etc. I've read the mackie VLZ3 mixers are good and are worth the extra and they aren't that expensive anyway...
They're obviously a step up from behringer (!) and i figure i may as well get a mixer that will stay with me and can be used in other setups such as live pa instead of a bog standard one that breaks down in a few months, or i end up selling.
So are the mackies where it's at or is there anything else worth considering at that price point? I want 8 channels and good eqs, don't need fx. dB readout is essential, that's something a lot of cheaper mixers lack and the led segments are usually crap as well.
Most important thing is i want the audio to be transparent and not coloured in anyway by the mixer other than by the eq of course! Any other recommendations cos it probably will be the VLZ3 802 unless there's anything else out there...
Cheers.

Yeah the Soundcraft M series are quite nice as far as budget mixers go. I picked up a used M8 not too long ago for $350. Much better than the old Mackie I had. If you want good EQs, the VLZ3 802 is probably not the best choice.

Thanks for the tips. I do prefer faders so the soundcraft M series looks good, i'll check them. They're priced around £289 so would have to be used. The eq is not a priority but i read real good things about the new VLZ3s...

Yamaha is an old standby for me. Very low noise, solid construction. Had it for 5 years and everything still works as well as brand new

the allen adn heath mixers are pretty good too and have the reputation of sounding a little better than the mackies though i can't verify that.. not quite the same specs as the mackie but has some other features

I like the mackie. As long as that eq is usable i can' t really see a better option, other than used at that price. I like the compactness of it and as long as the quality is there then great. Space is limited so i don't really have room for a 16:2 or one of those allen and heath, well i could but then where would i put the monitor! Anyway i only need 8 channels, i mainly want to free up the inputs on my RS and R3 and add a couple of extra inputs for plugging other gear in, mostly electronic and mostly for sampling into the SP555.

A bit too big for my setup but it's a nice looking mixer.

the 802 also has the great option of sending the muted channels to the aux output (3 & 4) so that you can have some some great routing options.

A&H also has a new nice looking small mixer called the ZED-14. Super cheap ($399) and flexible.... you could route audio to your SP-555 in a variety of ways, even through the USB port (via computer which you could use for some additional DSP)... not sure how it sounds, but Allen and Heath tends to get the benefit of the doubt
here, see this video. btw the R&D guy has a scab on his middle finger and curses under his breath at 2:58

i like to recommend the soundcraft compact10. fairly small (especially if you remove the plastic end panels), very flexible input options, very musical different eq than mackie (much lower mid), 10 actual separate inputs including 4 stereo channels, flexible routing. no aux sends, but the monitor or record busses can be used for that easily.
i will say however that the mackie overdrive is the nicest of any mixer i've used.

Cool. I can't think of a scenario where i'd need that though! Maybe i can use it creatively with the SP555 for fx processing...

I was thinking about usb as well. Those alesis multimixes look pretty good and the usb would streamline the connection between laptop and gear...
Atm the SP555 is my interface and it's actually pretty good but only goes up to 44.1khz. My plan is to put the mixer between any external source and line in on the SP555, instead of the SP555 into the mixer but i had thought about maybe getting a better interface then routing the SP555 into that. How good are those usb mixers?
