I definitely need one, right now i have my R3 connected to the RS7000 and my sh32 connected to the audio ins of my R3! This setup works but i need more inputs to run audio into my SP555 so i can sample. There's a few budget mixers but are they really good enough for recording? Besides i want a mixer with a decent amount of channels and connectivity for outboard fx etc. I've read the mackie VLZ3 mixers are good and are worth the extra and they aren't that expensive anyway...

They're obviously a step up from behringer (!) and i figure i may as well get a mixer that will stay with me and can be used in other setups such as live pa instead of a bog standard one that breaks down in a few months, or i end up selling.

So are the mackies where it's at or is there anything else worth considering at that price point? I want 8 channels and good eqs, don't need fx. dB readout is essential, that's something a lot of cheaper mixers lack and the led segments are usually crap as well.

Most important thing is i want the audio to be transparent and not coloured in anyway by the mixer other than by the eq of course! Any other recommendations cos it probably will be the VLZ3 802 unless there's anything else out there...

Cheers.

my buddy just picked up a phonic helix 18 mkII. He paid around 450. It looks pimp, and has firewire, but anyone used one of these?
I've never heard of the company before.
They also make a 12 channel mixer w/ most of the same features for much less. (around 130)

Check the review. ;) I've heard of phonic but don't know much about them, seems they've been around a while...

It's definitely an option i'm looking into, a firewire mixer and the phonic looks pretty good.

i already read some reviews. for the most part they dont mean shit unless they're written by actual users who used teh gear over a period of time( however short.)
the units they send magazines and websites are frequently cherry picked.
articles like that are nice for looking up features, but I already looked up the specs earlier.
thx tho

No problem! Like you i base my buying choices these days on end user experience more than some hand picked magazine that advertises the damn thing lol! I thought there was useful info there anyway and i think SOS is one of the more reliable magazines but i stopped buying it a while ago so i don't know. When i'm looking for stuff i usually check their review section. Probably cos they don't have some stupid rating system and they provide a lot of info regardless of the the reviewers own opinions. Anyway, the answer to your question was 30 years!

Thanks. I'll add that to the list. What do you make of the fx?

I also think the Yamaha MG series is great. I use a 10/2 for all sorts of things, and my band uses a 16/4. They're both nice, clean, and well built.

try this or something similar from the same store

Shame i can't try these mixers out! I'd really like to hear the pres and eqs to knowe what sorts of differences there are between them and which would suit my purposes best. The phonic sounds good though with the firewire and i can connect the SP555 to the tape in/outs...

I'm in the uk but i found those at thomann. Heard of them before but have no idea of the quality of their stuff. The more i'm thinking about it now i think it though it will pay to go for something better that will last. Something built well, with good pres, eqs and routing so it's flexible.

edit: the Yammy MG 16/2 looks good though, heck of a lot of connectivity and well designed.

you know what.. I think this might be the best choice:

I have a soundcraft spirit folio lite.. which is one of the most basic mixers they've made. It only has hi and lo shelving eq but they sound great.. it's a great little mixer, think i might upgrade to this one if i can scrape the change together..

Can't say, I got the one without FX but as a general rule I tend to avoid built-in effects on mixing boards.

Thanks for ther suggestions. There a lot of mixers out there! I'm gonna create a shortlist and then check each one, read the manuals etc cause they all seem to have unique features. The firewire mixer seems best as it combines the interface and mixing controls instead of using as mouse with some control panel applet so is more hands on. So the phonic is number one in principal followed by the mackie as it's compact and uses components from their more expensive mixers from what i understand. Any more suggestions keep em comin!
