Hi everybody! I haven't used my teac a3340s reel to reel in a bit, and now i am working on a project with adcbicycle & tmns ... but there is this horrrrrrrible odor from my beautiful machine. like the smell of roasted tape ghosts.

I don't know of anywhere I can take it to get looked at, and I'm a diy kind of gal anyway. Any suggestions? I'm not scared to open it up.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

i would suggest perhaps opening it up and finding the hottest spot inside, thats likely where the smell is being emitted...but thats all i could think of, its pretty normal for a transformer to get hot (big metal thing that the AC cord runs into)... but any other components arent so good... transistors usualy heat up, or ic's but the ones that do will have a heatsink.

my dad's reel to reel smells funny, but in a good, nostalgic kind of way. like old records.

get one of those pine tree things to hang inside?

could be electrical, but maybe it's a mechanical issue... lube it perhaps?

is something rubbing?
if you can take it apart and have it work at the same time I'd try looking to see if anything is smoking once you get it open.

Get you... always right in immediately with "hey everybody, lets get out the lube!" ;-)

A friend told me a story about one of his 4 year old daughter where they started to notice this really awful smell any time she was around. Feeling really bad and not wanting to say anything if his kid really did smell, they kept checking everything until it got so bad they took her to the doctors. Upon examination, they found she had stuck a piece of furniture foam up her nose and it had started to rot there.

Maybe try looking up your tape deck's nose to see if has done something similar?

wierd zanf...my little sister had the same thing happen only it was a rotting popcorn seed in her ear for about 2 years...guuuhhhkkk

lol @ zanf

This got me banned yesterday, but I must:

Roasted tape ghosts you say? Just be glad it doesn't smell of toasted r&pe ghosts!

open it up, my sony works fine after simply resetting all the moving parts, a lube, and some new tape. I know the fix probably isn't as simple (mine was dust / grit so i wasn't smelling burning) but it might just mean one part has to be replaced or just misaligned parts rubbing together (like adcb suggested). I hope it all gets sorted that saturation sounds fantastic on your stuff.

my cat's breath smells like cat food

go banana!

zanf, dkarma... i'm intruigued by the notion of hidden rotting things in the body... i just didn't know...

Lara, I have a teac a3440

Unfortunately last year the capstan belt started to slip. I tried to rig a new one but failed miserably, this makes me want to get it serviced again, It really is worth it to have an expert clean it up even if you can buy another one for the same cost.
