'a friend of mine' wants a soft sampler that can read in the common formats of sample-packs. he says that the only ones he's found are super expensive and they do much more than he would want anyhow. a simple multi-zone sampler is desired. Hardware would work too (if it's relatively cheap), again with the caveat that they would hae to be able to read in commonly available sample packs. I'll ask him which particular formats he's been looking at.

The end result is a piano sound which improves on the cheap midi keyboard he's using.

for windows there is Shortcircuit . Excellent soft sampla

but i dont know if it can read 'common sample-packs'

i asked my friend if he can tell me which formats he's interested in specifically. will let you know soon.

Short Circuit is free and can read wav, soundfont, rex, Akai, and Giga (in version 2) sample sets. It is not simple. It is an honest-to-god multisampler, but free.

sfz player is free and very simple, but it only handles soundfonts.

An Akai S2000 should be ~$100, but a CD or HD for it might cost more.

seconded. why bother with a sampler if he just wants a piano?

what better way to make authentic piano sounds besides buying a piano?

If you move it they can be cheap.
