reel to reel 4 track help
em411.com forums : Hardware recording, mastering : hardware based recording and mastering thread starter Hi, I want to start recording using tape so I've been looking at a few 4 track reel to reels on ebay. I'm attracted to the idea of having to record live (I use analogue synths with no sequencer) and having to work within the confines of the 4 track format....but can you record overdubs on a 4 track reel to reel? Also any advice on a good model to look for and the pros and cons of these machines would be much appreciated.

as for overdubs, i guess you could always mix an already recorded track with some new material (on some mixer), and feed that back to the tape on another track...
or you could bounce 2 or 3 tracks down and record the results on the 4th one to 'free them up' again, ping-pong style... or get two reel-to-reels, record a stereo mix of the first on 2 tracks of the 2nd etc etc...thats what i did with the 4tracker tape machine, back then... make sure you know what you're buying - most domestic reel-to-reels have four tracks but only two of them accessible at once. (sorry if you already knew that...)
You can overdub on the other tracks - total of up tp four! other than that, like slp said, you're bouncing from 3 etc Thanks guys.
I know almost nothing, never used one before. Do you mean Analog that you can only record onto 2 tracks simultaneously or that you can only use any 2 tracks simultaneously (for playing/monitoring or recording)? Is there an internet resource for people using these things to record music? Signup to comment
