thread starter If you wanted to simulate the effect of radio static, how would you do it? Basically, I want to take a sound, and have it sound really raspy and noisy - and be able to go smoothly from 100% noise to clean.
I'm looking for a reaktor/msp style solution to this problem, though pre-bottled VST's be interesting. The simplest solution I can imagine would be to use a envelope follower to track the volume of the input sound and use that to control the loudness of noise, and then cross-fade between the envelope-following noise and the input. The main problem (aside from lag in the envelope) with this is that, to my ears, the distortion you get on two different sounds on the radio aren't the same - something about the static is modulated by the input sound. Suggestions?

hmmm
am/fm? what's the difference?
ba-dum tssss
maybe use am or fm synthesis rather than noise - if youve got something that can add some am/fm modulation to a signal - i guess youd have to research how am/fm radios work to find out what kind of modulator waves you need
honestly i dont know the answer but im guessing using amplitude or frequency modulation will help get a sound like an am or fm radio well if it were me I'd turn on my ms2000 and pull up the little drums patch I programmed, play the snare sound and just crank the noise parameter all the way up but it may just be easier to pull out a radio
