real smooth. would love some tips on getting such nice rich drones like yers.!"
So, yeah. this would be a perfect questino for tmns or for bsr after his last drone-tacular releasicle. please help me put-a-digit on how to do teh drone.
I have really failed at this and can't seem to make the sound "real".
Always, I can hear the start/stop point and always all y'all's filters must be made of titanium and diamond encrusted gold...uh?

aye, grainstates is nice, sometimes i set it recording for 20 minutes then listen through and pick out the happy accidents that have a lush hook or bit of structure and then use that as a basis for a track.

Oh yeah, my other suggestion would be to detune two versions of the same sound, or use a pitchshifter like MadShifta at 50/50 wet dry and draw in some slow pitch modulation - it really expand the sound.

this method works well in reverse as well, take some long sample, preferably something with stereo depth (the closer to noise it gets the fuller the result will be), and convolve it with a (very) short sample of a synth sound. makes a subtly varying tone.

not that i often do drone music, maybe twice in my life actually, but something i'm always obsessed with is putting some binaural processing in there to dig into my subconcioussness. sine waves at around 50-100hz, bouncing around the stereo field, tend to sink right into the mix and do wonders for getting rid of headaches, for instance.

For a live drone performance a few months ago I used a bank of 10Harmonics, slow Risset tones and a little phasing in AudioMulch. Simple but effective.

...that's some stuff! It reminds me of musique conrete' and the interviews ..
...running the long strands of tape clear down the hallways to keep it spread out...

Yeah that last photo looks like he is messing with the motor maybe to slow it down some. Still makes for so sweet sounds. Not only are you getting the "warm" analog tape sound but just some unusally rare loops. I think atleast getting two of the tape players on a movable table as to off set the patterns of a loop. But the effort to go that far always makes it better. I love to do theings the hard way.

problem with that is that it sounds like the audiomulch risset! it's such a recognisable sound, you can always tell when folk are using it, i've heard it loads in live gigs here in manchester.
