"US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is standing down, President George W Bush has announced after bruising losses for Republicans in mid-term elections."
finally, he is gone. maybe he figured out that the democrats actually care about the country.

maybe that's because CNN realizes that they're not really independents - they're really just democrats that didn't run on the ticket
kinda like how Arnold Schwarzenegger isn't really a Republican.

I think this whole Rummy stepping down thing is pretty transparent. The Whitehouse knows that the Dems are going to force them to change thier exit strategy in Iraq and Rummy is going to play scapegoat so the Oval Orafice can save face.
I think the scarriest bit of news these days is the whole ranch in Paraguay thing:

Paraguay, former home of Nazi warcriminals...future home of American war criminals!

Before I studied politics then worked in journalism I had an optimistic view of how US and UK democracy works.
(For example: when one party is bad at its job then vote the others in)
Its impossible to remain hopeful however when you find that this plan never succeeds (mainly due to the majority of voters being rendered mentally incapacitated by the fear culture media combined with govt. tax punishment/blackmail policies targeted on the already struggling - frightened by change - deciding that the devil you know is better than the devil you dont).
When upper-middle to upper class voters see their lives as financially stable and rewarding then of course they are not going to vote for any real progressive 'people caring' party as they stereotypically buy the myths and see them as troublesome pot smoking leftists or unruly socialists.
With US democracy largely questionable now due to the influence of necessary corporate contributions from many military linked quangos then the real sad truth which really deeply upsets me - about rumsfeld (or any other political warmonger) leaving - is that things will not change for the better.
The democrats have the same dependancies on mostly the same financial institutions - continuous bush bashing is just putting off the inevitable truth, that when the next democrat president gets voted in then all the same big business war gangsters will financially blackmail him/her into endorsing hostile foreign policies - as they did with Clinton.
