--> just thought i'd post a link to a new video i've been working on.

link

not quite done with it, but i have other stuff i've got to do for the next few months, so i figured i'd put it up in it's simpler state. when i get back to it i'm gonna add some layers of simple illustrations and animation to it.

hope you enjoy it. thanks for watching/listening.

exquisite. What did you shoot it on? Was that film, or was that video and film as texture? I really love the look of the piece, and the quality of the colors... so rich, like oil paint... Can you share some of your secrets?

and if it was video, what format?

thanks fredo. sure, i'll spill the secret. nothing too complicated really. it's 24fps video shot with the panasonic dvx100. i pulled that into final cut pro and and edited, applying several layers of tweaked out Magic Bullet filters to give it grain and film look.

i'm afraid i don't have the compression quite right yet. i ran the final mov through flash 8 video encoder, but it makes things look really blocky. literally, you can see tiny squares on the screen in some shots pretty easily.

i'm also not as comfortable handling the 24p footage in fcp as i could be. i used to have a system to make sure everything was handled correctly, but i've forgotten it damnit. there's some tricks to getting that true 24p footage into the system and back out again. it pays to take notes. i wish i had. i've got to go back and fix some things when i do the final version a few months from now.

other than that i just make sure i expose and shoot properly (at least "properly" for the look i'm going for. in this case, a little darker than normal). that's probably the most important thing.

so is that DV-CAM, MINI-DV, HDDV, HDV...? I ask because I have been considering buying a camera to do a bunch of new videos and have been wondering which format to get... Obviously between DV-CAM and MINIDV I would go with DV-CAM, but between DV and HD I'm troubled. For a little over 4,000. smackers, which is about my budget, Sony is going to be releasing a new full res HD camera which does 24p as well and slomo! Your images had such a great amount of depth and detail, but also they were pretty bright... how does your camera work in lowlight situations?

the dvx100a is what i use. i borrow it from work actually. i couldn't afford it, or any of that stuff, on my own. it's regular old mini-dv. it does 24p, but no HD. it's a couple years old now. i'm sure panasonic has some new ones out that do HD.

$4000! wow. i haven't kept up with all the HD video craziness so i can't give you any tips i'm afraid. you prolly know way more than me.

the dvx100a does very well in low light in my opinion. but then again, it's the nicest camera i've ever used so i have nothing on it's level to compare it to.

awesome. very convincing film look.

awesome. looks so film. great job. i love it. watched it like 3 times in a row. im jealous.

This was really enjoyable! I think ill have to watch it again.
i like it very much.

I like the shots a lot, but I think you may have gone a bit overboard trying to make it look 'filmic'. I think pulling the exposure (just a bit), saturating the colors (again, just a bit), and adding just some minor vignetting would take you farther than trying to do too much with Magic Bullet. That said, I think it's a wonderful start. Best of luck with learning After Effects; it's a terrific program.

entrancing and engulfing.
gorgeous.
the sky motion and the big bouncy trees were fabulous.

I love this! This is great stuff!
The dvx 100 is the indie film maker's film camera. Parts of the 24p look is killed if you pan too fast, or fast forward too quickly. The only problem with the dvx100 is the 4:3 aspect ratio for their CCDs whereas the HD cameras will have true 16:9 aspect ratios.

u can always fake the 16:9 wiht croping.

i wish u didn't end on the the last note. just one earlier.

i always foudn it funny that 24p looks like flim so much even when its not.. our brains are tricked!
i wonder if someone has never seen film, if they'd prefer video or film better?

wow! thanks everyone. papergoose, raapie, fb, ejectorset, ms, vc, i truly appreciate the kind words.

jcd, i didn't want just a filmic look, i wanted an old beat up filmic look. so i think it's okay. trust me, i spent hours fiddling with those filters. i don't want to do that again. it's fun, but damn they take forever to render on our machine. and then if you mess up, you gotta start over. ouch. if you know any good after effects resources point me to 'em!
