just thought i'd post a link to a new video i've been working on.
link
not quite done with it, but i have other stuff i've got to do for the next few months, so i figured i'd put it up in it's simpler state. when i get back to it i'm gonna add some layers of simple illustrations and animation to it.
hope you enjoy it. thanks for watching/listening.

Sure you can crop, but you'll lose data that way.
Though the cadence of 24fps helps, it's the progressive part that really helps in the look. That is if you're using pal.
I think if you're comparing bold and the beautiful vs something like sin city, which is shot in hi def, most would go for sin city. It just looks filmic though they're all video.

The dvx 100 is the indie film maker's film camera. Parts of the 24p look is killed if you pan too fast, or fast forward too quickly. The only problem with the dvx100 is the 4:3 aspect ratio for their CCDs whereas the HD cameras will have true 16:9 aspect ratios."
thanks jogn. as you can probably tell by my responses to fredo, i'm waiting out the whole changeover to HD stuff. not only with cameras, but home electronics also. jesus h that crap is confusing and misleading a lot of times. all the things i have now (cameras, tv, dvd) work fine so i'm gonna wait until i need something new and hopefully by then all the HD mess will be sorted out. do you have any HD gear?

i wish u didn't end on the the last note. just one earlier.
i always foudn it funny that 24p looks like flim so much even when its not.. our brains are tricked!
i wonder if someone has never seen film, if they'd prefer video or film better?"
i know what you mean. i was working with it in fcp and the raw video just looked so nice and crisp i thought about just leaving it. but like i say, i wanted that beat up old film look for that nostalgic effect, like an old PBS nature film or an old home movie reel, so i went ahead and mushed it up. it works for this project.

oooh. thanks for the link. a buddy of mine and i talked forever about building one of those. this was a few years back when the prices on anything decent were still skyhigh. i've seen some good plans also, but i am no hardware wizard so those $300 tiffen's look good to me. hmmm.

Chris & Trish Meyers remind me of the Married News Team from Tom Goes to the Mayor, but they're great at introducing fairly complex ideas in a simple manner. That's why they've been writing for DV magazine for so long. An archive of some of their past articles can be found here:

Ayato@web has less than perfect English, and he assumes you are already proficient with the program (and stocked up on premium plug-ins), but he's got some tutorials that teach you how to do the 'wow' stuff, the CNN bumper stuff, the fancy, glowing, shining stuff. And that can be very good stuff to know.

CreativeCOW is definitely a site to check out, but that site seems to be down. Not sure if this is temporary or permanent. It's worth attempting several times, since it's a large and deep resource of tutorials written by various professionals.

Hope you continue to post videos!

Hey don't worry about the entire HD thing, i've got the same feelings as you, i'm not about to fork out for HD gear of my own, except maybe for a hdv camera. It's probably not going to get sorted out til like 2005 or something, though the pace seems to be quickening. The reason that you might want a HD camera though would probably be for the added pixels, so you can selectively crop pictures, and then fit to ntsc/pal resolution. That's about the only thing going for it or the more compressed HDV, AVCHD. For the casual shooter, that's totally fine. Everything else can be rented.
There's a website out there that has a blueprint for making a $14 steady cam. Here you go! link

thanks for the info jcd! you know, i think we've got that meyers book here at work. i just need to dive into i guess. a matter of finding the time i guess. some of it does look kinda it-was-cool-in-the-90's, but i can see how it would get the basic concepts across nicely.

i might try to build the $14 one that jogn posted before i spend $300. but knowing me i'll end up with a broken thumb and bruises and buy the $300 one anyways. ever since i saw the big-wheel shot in the shining i've wanted a steadi-cam.

ya, let work pay for it and borrow it, or rent it as far as cameras go. that's my philosophy. i'm cheap these days. as far as dvd goes, i've seen a few in crutchfield for like $1000. wtf? HD who? i just got rid of my vinyl records for pete's sake. i'm not ready for all this.
thanks for the link! have you built one of these?
