I thought about a post i made recently (when drunk) where i said:
"i dont come here to "learn" anything"
but i thought about it and realised that Ive picked up much valuable knowledge without intentionally seeking it.
if you know what i mean.
i started thinking about what i have learned as a direct result of this site:
bass - i never used to think about it or explore it seriously in my tracks...my basslines were always random, accidental things. I now spend a lot of time thinking about how the bass sounds.
circuit bending - i hadn't even heard of the concept before. now my flat is filled with strange sounding audio weapons.
playing live - I used to think I needed a band or a laptop to play gigs until i started seeing blogs/photos of ordinary people from around the world doing gigs with essentially the same gear ive got.
the site also got me to stop trying to do IDM cos i realised too many people are churning that out. i think because i started making music with a 4track and some fx-pedals the quickness/slickness of computers dazzled/spoiled me slightly.
This site made me realise not all computer-music is good. So i started getting back to my more off-the-cuff, one-take vibe...rather than fiddling about putting reverb on every second snare hit etc etc...
what has this site taught you, or inspired you to do?

Mixing. I was pretty dumb about mixing before I got here and encountered jdg's eq tips.
Oh yeah, this site inspired me to try something new and creative with my music and not to be worried about sounding slick and professional.

this site inspired me to put reverb on every second snare hit.
also i learned to have more faith that there are pockets of decency in the online world, and later, at stfu i found out that that decency extended to the world at large too.
i was inspired to be 300% more critical of my music, because there was so much great track making going on here.
bass: i think about that much more now too. jdg had a lot to do with that.

LOL
but you make it sound good.
i would also agree that jdg consistently telling people "needs more bass" altered my music.

learned too much stuff here:
that i should never dumb anything down for fear of being misunderstood.
that people hear every corner I cut, so I should strive not to cut any.
that there are lots of amazing, unknown people making brilliant music-there's always more to hear.
how to circuit bend stuff without destroying it.
how to do online research for gear
lots and lots of specific techniques-most recently-
from cbit, trying to set up a good workflow to make the creative process transparent in ableton
from bla, the concept of midi-audio-midi-audio generative feedback
from implexgrace, the idea of using compression as a bottleneck for noise tracks
from mlbot and jdg, to stfu and look for it at kvr
from fredo, deltasleep-inspiration to be an island-and music like "white noise" and "silver apples"
and plenty of little ideas and techniques...
from mixit-
the ideas of making sine and square waves out of any audio, how to copy ochre and skerror, how to mix a little better, all the different ways to maek teh afx beatz, how to approach making dance music, how to start out with a technical problem in order to learn a bunch of stuff all at once.

it taught me that there is a world of people
interested in electronic music not defined by the words "trance or hardcore"
that eq is everything (thanks jdg)
that amplification is the most amazing sound design tool there is (thanks erik)
that narrative is important (thanks erik again)
that there will always be someone more telented to you and you just have to live with that (thanks eric again )
that music is about who you are not whichbandwagon you fancy being associated with (thanks disastrato)
that the groove is everything (dumafuji)
and for live musicits helps if you have some "gawn son" (ekstrak)
that stories can be sad but beautiful (fredo)
that ambient drones can be interwoven and complimentary to each other if you find the right eq inwhich each blanket can sit (thanks bsr)
that breathtakingly intricate clickerty beats can be made with an old pc (thanks henry / gulo gulo)
that track titles need not be short (thanks build)
that we can take the giant leap from virtual to reality and come together and jam / play / rock and still get on (thanks stfu - and all its parts )
that i can be two people and express myself differently to the same people and its ok
that sometimes its just best to leave us to it (thanks em)

i'm actually returning to EM, i have a vague memory of it since i was a toddler. back then people had avatars.
I think what i've learned during my short stay here is that there really are some internet communities out there that rawk. rawk hard. also I enjoy reading about peoples different approaches and methods of music production.
I obviously missed JDG's eq rant, link?

It never survived the meteor impact that also destroyed the avatars.
