I'm so disappointed that synth makers are making this kinda shit. I just don't know who's buying it. The 201 has the same engine as the V-synth, JP-8000, etc etc etc. The AN200 is the same as the AN1x, the Microkorg is the same as the MS2000, blah blah blah.
Really, there are only like 5 synth engines that make about 90% of synths sold in the last 10 years.

i repeat ...little boxes of plastic stuffed with sloppy corn-filled dung. i double dog dare roland, korg, yamaha, etc. to make a worthwhile synth.

you guys have issues.
these synths really aren't that bad. maybe not your particular definition of perfect ... but that's why we have a free market, i guess.

who cares about the synths? it would just be nice if these guys could figure out what "pulsewidth" is and realize that the term "8 bit" is as relative to a 101 as paul okenfold/BT are to er.. anything good..
i could read 2 book reports on "beowolf" from school kids and learn just as much about the differences between the 201 and the 101. not that to want to know.

data, don't get me wrong. i <3 the 101. it aint a pro-one ...or an ob-1, but i like it. and watching these morons champion the 201 over a 101 was as enjoyable as a tract infection.
my issues with the current mainstream manufactures of synths is that they haven't made anything innovative in 10+ years. yeah, d-beam this and groove box that. they're lazy. they repackage shite analog modeled synth engines in a box that emulates their past successes of 20 years ago. vp-330 vs. vp-550. how many more times are they going to reuse the 303 model number? it's not about digital vs. analog either. there are some decent digital synths out there. i just think the sh-201 is not one of em.

there are a few boxes that are nice coming from some of these companies. the kaos pad springs to mind, as does the vp9000. but. overall i agree with you grapeape.
there are a few rogue companies, which i'm sure you weren't speaking on, that produce genuinely innovative stuff. Also, i'm sure there are innovative people working for the big names. the problem stems, more than likely, from no creative ethos at the head of these companies - in which the bottom line is their only moral and material footing in the music industry. it probably makes no difference to some of those people whether they're selling synths or toaster-ovens ... the 201 was probably the intellectual product of a marketing team rather than a team of synth designers.

the sh201 is "good" in a couple of ways- it's shit easy to program, it'd be good for a total noob who gets a woody when they think about the pulse width being able to modulate the 8 bit filter sweep.
it's got enough polyphony so you don't get confused by "note stealing," but if your friend with the dreadlock mohawk decides he needs to put a bass in yr screamo trance song while you're engaging all 10 fingers, you might learn something about how dsp works.
everytime i go to guitar center, i try another wanky box. the sh201 was by far the easiest of the VA's.
what? 600$
fuck it i take it all back;)
