i dont know what to do with it though
somehow try to do a live set with it (+sequencer (mmt8))?
how much can you do with a 1sec sample (32khz)? (or an 8 second nasty sample(4khz))
i think im just going to look at it and feel happy

I'm gonna guess you have mostly 16-bit samples on your computer, and the s612 is a 12bit sampler, so to do any sorta sample dump you'd first have to change the bit depth of a sample. Then xfer it over MIDI. I can guarantee you the fastest way to do this is over an audio cable. For a 12 bit sample, I can't imagine you are losing any sample quality.
Plus, you'll feel all old-skool.
I'd allow you to sample-dump to the s612 from an Amiga. But anything else is totally against the spirit of Xmas..

i was thinking about the idea of editing a wave to get some exact waveforms or something but itd be a pain to do (more difficult than making a single cycle sinewave for my tx16w- which was quite difficult)- i think i could just about do it with 2 mmt8s and a datadisk
but youre right i might aswell just sample a sound through audio in
the broken slider looks more difficult to fix than i thought- i opened it up and had a look and its snapped off right at the bottom with only a tiny bit of plastic sticking out- i think ill have to superglue something to it

definitely do some audio rate loops. big harsh synth tones. another fun thing to do with it is sequence a whole bunch of really short notes and then twist the "decay" (actually release) knob to let out more of the sample on the fly. it's a very fun sampler to use thanks to the physical controls.

i think im going to use it for kick drums or bass lines
id love to be able to get exact waveforms into it (without having to inprecisely sample them) through midi sample dumps but itd be difficult
itd be good if i could piece together some single cycle waves into a kick drum on my tx16w and then dump the wave to my sequencers and edit it to suit how the s612 accepts dumps and transfer it like that- bit of a challenge though
but i really like the idea of having one massive machine that just does the kick drum in some techno- (i could use the sliders to move the kick a bit to get it spot on)

I think you'll find the sound of smacking the S612 with a mallet to be rather dull and lifeless

Wow. My friend had one and it was the coolest sampler next to a Fairlight... only because you could alter the beginning and end points in realtime. Exciting? Not until you made the end point go before the start point and vice-versa - IN REAL-TIME. I loved what that did to sounds! And then you could trigger the sound regularly while you squished and mangled along. Pure joy! I'd do that for days if I had one. Make whole tracks with it. I know of no software that does that off-shelf. Total haunted sampler-box. Make us some weirdness - it's a gold-mine of oddness.

i still havent used it yet
i tried to fix the broken slider with some putty stuff but i didnt mix it properly (or maybe its because its about 20 years old) so it didnt stick
the slider has snapped off right at the bottom- theres only a tiny spike of plastic sticking out a bit (doesnt protude out of the front panel) im scared to use glue on it in case i get some on the slider track
anyway- its just sitting there (looking incredibly cool) waiting for me to get my shit together (cables! i need CABLES!)
i imagine a sampled kick will sound pretty fat indeed
ive got some sinewave programming to do and additive synthesis on my other sampler (tx16w) to create the kick before i can sample it to the s612
the other thing i want to do is play a live set with it (and only it)- some very repetitive techno based on 1 sample
did jeff mills use one on that bangin track on x103 thera ep? it kind of sounds like what i imagine you could do with it

have you used that thing yet?? sample complex stuff and really f__k it up! Like I said - total weirdness. Save drums and basses for 'real' samplers.
