I was in a charity shop this afternoon, crate-digging for bargains, when I came across some old Pianoforte sheet music booklets.
The kind of thing they sold in old fashioned music shops.

a couple of titles caught my eye.
I held them up to the shop assistant and said:
"i dont think you should be selling this in here"
she laughed and said:
"You can have them for 30p each"

An oxymoron if I've ever heard one. I mean, I see where you're coming from in that it's so ridiculous that it's unbelievable, but it's not comical to people whose grandparents were beaten and burned.

It's an interesting thing to think about whether it matters what the title is if the music is 'good'. I think it does. Obviously the combination of notes isn't going to be saying something recognizably racist, but probably it's the equivalent of 'blackface' in music - a jokey interpretation of slaves' music, meant as a novelty for the amusement of white people. Essentially, an assertion of 'power over'. Imho, best left in the past.
People like to think that we are all 'postmodern', floating disconnected signifiers everywhere and all that. But the only reason that guy in the video didn't get his ass kicked is because they were recording. And again, there's some humour in the blatant ridiculousness of it, but once again the white guy is showing that he has power over black people. There are better ways to get laughs, imo.

Sorry to be a buzzkill but this thread got my back up. Not the original post, really. I've seen things just as bad in my own thrift shop tours.

subset-all those people were actors or signed release forms.

imo people are waaaaaay too sensitive about race.

you would say that whitey.

actually somebody on myspace mistook me for a black person the other day.

it was quite humorous, i'm pretty white and you can tell from my pics.

oops, I know it's been a while but I just remembered about this.
Well, they are pretty good actors - or if they signed the release forms at least they are not being unknowingly exploited. In fact, I will admit that some of it was kind of funny - just that a person would be so brazenly(sp?) idiotic.
However, even if they are willing participants, I still think the premise is problematic. Dont' get me wrong, though - I wouldn't want this to be censored.
I think it's good to encourage debate, especially on issues that often get swept under the rug. Even if you have to push someone's buttons to do it.

datathinner - You're from texas, right?...hmmmm...
