--> anyone heard this guy? i find it really amazing. he has had loads of mental health problems over the years but its still about sometimes. better than bob dylan imo.

i just saw the dvd - the devil and daniel johnston. its crazy. that mans life is crazy.

he was once flying back from a gig in his dads plane (he was like 35 at this point and had just come out of a mental hospital) and he was reading a casper the friendly ghost comic. on the front was casper parachuting so he said to his dad that he wanted to do it. his dad said they didn't have any parachutes, so daniel johnston got angry, turned the engine off and threw the keys out the window. his dad had to crash land in a load of trees. the funniest thing is the pics of him afterwards, he has a massive smile on his face as he things he did a good thing.

anyway, you should watch the dvd, or watch some of his stuff on youtube, he really is amazing.

No, actually I think Djugel turned me on to it. I hope I didn't offend you, I never noticed that you listed this as a song in the "most beautiful music" thread. Sorry. I just watched The Descent and right now feel like I'm trapped in the caves and all of you Johnstonites have really sharp teeth.... If I just keep quiet maybe you won't hear me leave...

haha, no, no offense at all. Djugel turned me on to it too, a few years ago.

My teeth are very sharp.

i have fantastic a fantastic set of canines.

hey not every gifted artists has a quack doctor and parents that like to medicate and sedate their kids. so we lose too many creative things, but not all.

Fredo listen to walking the cow and the one about water disappearing and ,hey joe,,think they are all on 'hi how are you'.I think daniel johnston has a tremendous amount of crap songs but there a few that merit the hype are very oddly striking. The songs i mention are the kinda most obvious of those i would say.

ugh i watched the descent, too. what a pile of crap.

watched the film... twice. The dude is fascinating. And there's something to his purity most definitely, and a few of the live performances were extremely moving and odd... Still on the fence about the music though. Seems hit or miss. Same with the lyrics. Sometimes they are so beautiful, so honest and odd, so raw... other times you feel like he's grabbing at straws.

Anyway, equally fascinating is this cult that has developed about the guy. And he must have been doing something right!

oh yes i saw the teaser for this movie. looks very interesting. i live out in the sticks so it'll be 2008 before i see it, though. i am definitely interested in this, though.

omg you don't know how well deserved this statement is, not just on pharma drugs, but so many other things have been keeping the human race back.

Excellent movie, I finally found a place in town that rented it out. I also really dig the Discovered Covered cd. Its great to hear the songs as Johnston wrote them, and then to see what other artists can do with them. I really like the beck, Sparklehorse/Flaming Lips and Eels covers.

I really hope the movie and cd has helped him out financially. I know the one main way he was making money was through Stress Records, and they have stoppped recently.

yeah i went to buy some tapes and stress are out of print of everything. i bought a cd on amazon of his, hope he gets some cash

Jandek is cool too, I think that artists like Beck and Devendra Banhart owe a lot to him. He's similar to Daniel Johnston in that they both make weirdo outsider folk.

He has quite a backstory as well:

Also, Kids is great but I think I like Gummo better.

edit: fact check
I believe that Casper did die of an hanging, in a hotel in Vegas.

Gummo is about these poor white trash/rednecks in Xenia, Ohio (though it was filmed in Nashville). The dialogue and plot is almost entirely improvised, and most of the players are non-actors.

This site WeirdoMusic has some cool stuff. Daniel Johnston, Jandek and even Leonard Nimoy.

I first found about Jandek and Daniel Johnston a while ago, when I was doing research for my behavioral science degree. I also found this guy name Francis E. Dec. He did these schizo rants, pretty nutty stuff. I think the audio versions are by someone just reading what Dec had written. World Wide Domination, Gangsters, poison control. He also has some pretty racist views, which of course sucks.

Francis E. Dec

i have the DVD coming from netflix (deltasleep's favorite DVD place). can't wait to watch it.
